12/23/09 | Men's Basketball
EUGENE, Ore. -- Sophomore guard Malcolm Armstead made five-of-six 3-pointers en route to scoring a career-high 23 points in leading the University of Oregon men's basketball team to a 77-71 home win over Idaho State Tuesday night in Eugene. The Ducks, winners of their third straight game, improved to 7-4 overall. Idaho State dropped to 2-10 on the season.
Armstead, who played a season-high 38 minutes, had 13 of his points in the second stanza. He was joined in double figures by sophomores Michael Dunigan and Garrett Sim who both had 14 points, and freshman forward E.J. Singler who finished with 11 points and a team-best seven rebounds.
Idaho State shot 58.7 percent from the floor (27-of-46) and 46.7 percent on 3-pointers (7-of-15). The Bengals finished 10-of-15 from the free throw line. Oregon shot 45.3 percent from the field (24-of-53) while hitting 10-of-22 from behind the arc for 45.5 percent. The Ducks hit 19-of-28 from the free throw line (67.9 percent).
Oregon opened the game by missing its first six shots, but grabbed six offensive rebounds during that stint.
The Ducks took the game's momentum just three minutes in when freshman forward Jamil Wilson came up with a steal, pushed the break, then lofted a soft alley-oop to a charging Dunigan who promptly put-home the two-hand flush. That play forced ISU to call a timeout with the Ducks leading 6-2.
A pair of 3-pointers by Sim, and another by Armstead, helped the Ducks build the lead up to nine points at 17-8 with 12:32 left in the half.
Broderick Gilchrest sank two 3-pointers to push Idaho State on a 15-4 run from 10:17 to 6:56 on the clock, giving the Bengals a 25-24 advantage (their first since the opening minutes).
Armstead hit a 3-pointer with under a minute to play, and on the Ducks' final possession of the half he converted a lay-up as the game-clock expired to give UO a 36-33 lead at halftime.
Oregon scored 15 points off 10 ISU turnovers in the half. ISU's Gilchrest had 13 points and Chron Tatum added 10, as Idaho State shot a scorching 62 percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes. Oregon was led offensively by Armstead who had 10 points and Dunigan who tallied nine points, seven of which came from the free throw line (7-of-8).
Armstead scored five points over the first 1:30 in the second half, and Sim added another 3-pointer at the 17:12 mark to give the Ducks a 46-39 advantage. ISU countered with a 7-2 run over a two-minute span to cut the Oregon lead to two points.
A 3-pointer by Armstead lifted Oregon to an 8-point advantage, 59-51, with 10:50 to play.
Armstead created a pair of buckets with his dribble penetration, with assists to Wilson and Dunigan who both converted 3-point plays. The latter, a lay-up by Dunigan, put the Ducks up 69-62 with just over four minutes remaining.
Made free throws by Sim, Singler and Jacob down the stretch iced it for the Ducks.
UO had 15 assists to 14 turnovers, while forcing 15 Bengal turnovers and limiting ISU to nine assists. The Ducks scored 21 points off ISU's turnover-total. Oregon had an 11-2 advantage in bench points, led by sophomores Jeremy Jacob and Teondre Williams who had 10 of those points.
Oregon (7-4) will take a short holiday break before returning to action Dec. 28 with a home game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Tip-time is slated for 7 p.m. (PST) from McArthur Court in Eugene.
