EUGENE - In the Oregon Duck Invitational Tuesday, sophomore Kendra Little and freshman Ashley Edwards placed third and fifth overall, while the No. 29 Ducks combined on a 298 final round - the third-lowest of the tourney to place second overall (902), and trailed only No. 28 San Francisco (first, 887) at the event hosted by Shadow Hills Country Club.
Oregon (second, 301-303-298) notched its second-best finish ever in the 15th edition of the tourney behind its win in 2008. UO also finished second four times prior (1990, '99, 2004 and '05), and placed top five three other times - 1989 (fifth, 971),' 92 (fourth, 945) and '07 (fifth, 943).
UO's low scorer each round, Little (third, 73-75-73-221) notched her second top-five finish of the season after she won the season-opening Giustina Memorial Classic (69-73-73-215) in Corvallis last September. The returning All-Pac-10 Second Team selection also posted three top-five overall placings as a freshman in 2007-08 that included a win in the same Duck tourney last year at the Eugene Country Club (70-73-71-214).
Edwards - who shared the team's low score the first two rounds - continued to shine as UO's top newcomer this season and posted her first top-five overall finish of her career (fifth, 73-75-76-224). In earlier tourneys this year, she had finished second in the UNLV Spring Rebel Invitational (29th-t, 80-74-73-227) this spring and 12th in the Kent Youel Invitational (72-77-71-220) and Stanford Intercollegiate (57th-t, 72-73-78-223) last fall.
Duck senior Cathryn Bristow tied Little for the best final round Tuesday among UO's entries to climb into a tie for 12th overall (79-76-73-228). In previous Duck Invitationals, she had finished tied for sixth as a junior (75-77-72-224), 10th as a sophomore (79-77-77-233) and ninth as a freshman (82-74-72-228).
UO's other team entries also finished top 35 overall in the final standings - junior Felicia Eastick (19th-t, 78-77-76-231) and sophomore Erica Omlid (31st-tie, 77-82-79-238).
The Ducks also entered three players as individuals and were led by junior Kate Hildahl who posted her second top-10 finish of the season (ninth-tie, 77-76-74-227) after she placed third in the season-opening Giustina Memorial Classic in Corvallis in September (71-70-79).
UO's other individual entries included sophomore Monika Graf (36th-t, 77-83-79-239) and senior Blair Ressler (42nd-t, 79-80-82-241).
Overall in the final team standings, No. 28 San Francisco (first, 291-301-295) tied the second-lowest score of this season's tourney Tuesday to win by 15 strokes over No. 29 UO (second, 301-303-298), while No. 62 Oregon State placed third (308-302-300-910).
Other teams that played in the 12-team tourney included No. 66 Missouri (fourth, 313-303-299-915), No. 57 UC Davis (fifth, 320-302-305-927), No. 75 Wisconsin (sixth, 312-323-303-938), No. 69 Washington State (327-312-303-942), UC Riverside (eighth, 327-326-295-948), Illinois (ninth, 320-316-322-958), Portland State (10th, 333-326-322-981), Montana (330-333-322-985) and Portland (12th, 329-335-326-990).
The top individuals the first day - Natasha Podmore and Danielle Cvitanov of San Francisco - held onto the same placings in the final round to finish first (71-72-75-218) and second (72-75-73-220), to finish just ahead of UO's Little (third, 73-75-73-221).
Looking ahead, UO has a week off before it competes in one of the nation's finest regular season stops, the Ping ASU Invitational at the Karsen Golf Course, Friday-Sunday, April 3-5. More tourney information will be available at Arizona State's www.TheSunDevils.com website.
