Theisen, McVein Take First Day Leads at Big Green in the Desert

MESA, Ariz. -- Brianne Theisen and Aaron McVein took the first day lead of the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively, Wednesday at the Big Green in the Desert multi-event competition on the campus on Mesa Community College.
Theisen, a sophomore from Humboldt, Sask., led with 3,340 points. Wednesday she just missed a personal best in the 200 meters, running 25.24, and was only three-quarters of an inch off her PR in the high jump, clearing 5-10.5.
Senior Kalindra McFadden was in second with 3,175 points. She also had a big performance in the 200 meters, running 25.44. Junior Erin Funkhouser was seventh with 2,591 points.
Competing in his first decathlon, McVein led with 3,666 points and recorded three PRs. The junior from Eugene, Ore., jumped 21-8.75 in the long jump, threw 39-11.5 in the shot put and ran 51.41 in the 400 meters.
Junior Marshall Ackley was second with 3,427 point and posted a big PR in the 400 meters by running 49.25.
"They all did a very good job," said associate director of track and field Dan Steele. "We're on pace for some NCAA marks, which was our goal coming in and McVein had a good day for his first decathlon."
