SEATTLE ? The University of Oregon softball team (15-32, 2-16) lost its final road game of the season, 8-2, at No. 4 Washington, Sunday afternoon.
For the Huskies (39-9, 12-6), starter Danielle Lawrie won her fourth game in five days, thanks to her seven-game season high 18 strikeouts. The returning Canadian Olympian also walked two, allowed one hit, and one of her two runs allowed was earned.
The Ducks hung two runs on the scoreboard in the second inning that was started by a pair of walks to freshmen Kelsey Chambers and Samantha Skillingstad. Sophomore Cortney Kivett followed with a bloop hit off a 3-2 pitch into shallow left field that scored Chambers. The throw home was attempted to be cut-off but it went off her glove into the UO dugout and allowed Skillingstad to score.
On the mound, Skillingstad pitched her 15th complete game of the season, and struck out five, walked four, allowed seven hits, and six of her eight runs allowed were earned.
The Spokane, Wash., native now has 156 strikeouts and improved a position to seventh all-time in a season for UO, and is only two away from the sixth-best mark (159).
Among other all-time Duck list updates, school record holder and senior Sari-Jane Jenkins added her 13th stolen base of the season in the first inning to increase her career total to 93. The Salem, Ore,. native also ranks top-10 career-wise in hits (second, 228), runs (fourth, 133), doubles (seventh, 33), walks (ninth, 70) and batting average (10th, .324).
UW took an early lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. After the opening batters singled and reached on a hit by pitch, the runners attempted a double steal with two outs, and a high throw by the catcher sailed into left field and a misplay by the outfielder allowed both runners to score. Ashlyn Watson later added her seventh homer of the season over the left field wall to make it 3-0.
The Huskies added four more in the third inning. With the bases loaded (thanks to two walks and a hit), an error by the shortstop on a grounder between her legs led to a throw home, and a subsequent throw by the catcher to third base on an advancing runner sailed into the left field allowing the remaining runners and hitter to come around to score.
At the plate for UW, five batters hit safely, and two had multiple hits ? leadoff hitter Ashley Charters (2-for-4, 1 run) and Alicia Blake (2-for-2).
UO juggled its batting lineup Sunday to shake up things offensively and saw Skillingstad and sophomore Brittany Rumfelt in the pre-game batting order for the first and fifth time this season, respectively. Sunday also marked freshman Jordan Reeves' second collegiate plate appearance, as the Fairbanks, Alaska native appeared as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning.
Earlier in the weekend, UO lost to the Huskies Saturday in Seattle, 11-0 in five innings, and at home, 2-0, in mid-April. The Ducks opened the weekend with an 8-0 loss at No. 2 UCLA, 8-0, Friday.
Looking ahead, Oregon returns home for the final week of the regular season with three games Thursday-Saturday, May 7-9, vs. No. 7 Arizona and No. 6 Arizona State who have combined for the last three national titles. The Thursday and Friday games vs. UA and ASU both start at 4 p.m., while Saturday's final game vs. ASU begins at 11 a.m. and is ?Senior Day' and will honor the duo of Sari-Jane Jenkins and Melissa Rice.
Friday's game vs. Arizona is a Bi-Mart 2 For 1 Day, with coupons for two general admission tickets for the price of one available at any Eugene/Springfield Bi-Mart location.
