EUGENE - Freshmen Samantha Skillingstad and Lindsey and Kelsey Chambers paced the Oregon softball team to a dramatic 2-1, 10-inning win over No. 6 Arizona Thursday, in the first game of UO's final homestand of the season.
Skillingstad (12-14) struck out eighth, walked four, allowed 10 hits, and allowed only one earned run - a home run to national leader Stacie Chambers on a 3-2 pitch to open the fifth inning.
UO (16-32, 3-16) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior Sari-Jane Jenkins led off with a walk, stole second base, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a suicide squeeze by junior Neena Bryant.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Kelsey Chambers led off the inning with a single to center field, and after a fielder's choice, sophomore Ashley Kivett singled, and Lindsey Chambers followed with a double to left center field to score the winning run.
“I was confident at-bat," Lindsey Chambers said. "I had seen her twice before and relied on good mechanics and hit it. This win boosts us for the weekend with two more games against another talented team.”
Skillingstad shined when it mattered the most as UA stranded 14 runners in the game, including three in the second inning, two in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings, and single runners in the seventh, ninth and 10th innings.
The Spokane, Wash., native polished off her 11th game with seven or more strikeouts and also logged her 16th complete game of '09 against a feared 'Zona offense that entered the game leading the nation in scoring (8.23 runs per game), home runs (2.29 per game) and slugging (.651), and ranked second in batting (.337).
On the season, Skillingstad now has 164 strikeouts ? the sixth-best total in school history for a season ? and just shy of the fifth- and fourth best-marks of Katie Wiese (168, 1989) and Rachelle Taylor (fourth, 169, 1994).
On the mound for eight-time national champion Arizona (39-14, 11-7), starting pitcher Sarah Akamine (18-6) struck out 10, walked two, and both of her runs allowed were earned.
At the plate for the Wildcats, leadoff hitter Brittany Lastrapes, Lauren Schutzler and Chambers all had two hits, and four others had single hits.
Jenkins' stolen base extended her school career record to 95, while her 229th career hit moved her within five of the school record (234). She also walked twice Thursday and now stands top 10 all-time for UO career-wise in runs (fourth, 134), walks (seventh, 72) and hitting (ninth, .325).
Kelsey Chambers and Ashley Kivett both ended the day 2-for-4, and three other Ducks had single hits - sophomore Monique Fuiava in the first inning, Jenkins and Lindsey Chambers.
The Ducks have won two in a row vs. UA in Eugene after a 3-2 victory in April 2008 thanks to a complete game by then-senior Alicia Cook. UA won the first two meetings this season in Tucson 11-3 (5 innings) and 8-7.
“We're growing up, and they're not freshmen anymore," Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said. "They really played and pitched great. To hold Arizona to one run is phenomenal. We know how good they are, and we never gave in. We hope this starts a good weekend.”
Looking ahead, UO next faces No. 9 Arizona State Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. The latter game will be UO's 'Senior Day' and will honor Sari-Jane Jenkins, Melissa Rice and Courtney Shlee before the game.
