EUGENE ? University of Oregon junior Neena Bryant clubbed her team-leading eighth homer of the season Friday, but defending softball national champion and No. 9 Arizona State still came away with a 5-1 win at Howe Field.
The Placentia, Calif., native's 28th career homer over the center field fence in the first inning still ranks her fifth all-time for UO, and she is now only nine away from the UO school record owned by Andrea Vidlund (37).
On the mound for UO (16-33, 3-17), sophomore starter Brittany Rumfelt (2-10) struck out six, walked one, allowed nine hits, and four of her five runs allowed in her 6 1/3 innings were earned. Freshman Samantha Skillingstad came in for the final 2/3 innings, struck out one and walked one.
At the plate for UO, freshman second baseman Kelsey Chambers went 2-for-2 with singles in first and fourth innings, and she also reached via a walk in a nine-pitch at-bat to open the seventh inning. The Concord, Calif., native also had two hits a day earlier against No. 6 Arizona, and tops the team's newcomers this season in hits (26), homers (5) and RBIs (21).
ASU starting pitcher Megan Elliott (10-6) struck out five, walked one, gave up three hits, and her run allowed was earned in her 11th complete game of the season.
At the plate for Arizona State (39-16, 9-11), catcher Renee Welty went 3-for-3, left fielder Jessica Mapes and designated player Kaylyn Castillo each went 2-for-4, and two others hit safely.
The Sun Devils took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run double by Castillo after Mapes singled and Kaitlin Cochran walked to open the game. Rumfelt ended the inning with three straight outs on pop-ups to third base and shortstop and a strikeout to ASU's third, fourth and fifth hitters.
ASU added a run in the fifth inning on an RBI infield groundout after a Cochran hit by pitch and Castillo single started the inning.
The visitors' final runs came in the seventh inning when with runners on second and third on a throwing error by the second baseman that went wide of home plate and allowed two runs to score.
The Ducks own a 1-1 mark this weekend after Skillingstad topped No. 6 Arizona, 2-1, Thursday in her 16th complete game of the season that featured a game-winning RBI double by freshman Lindsey Chambers in the 10th inning.
“I liked the energy we started with today,” Oregon head coach Kathy Arendsen said, “we just made some defensive mistakes and because of that we forced it at the plate. We need to find a way to manufacture some runs and create some offense. To sum up our season it's been up and down. We have really great games and then we have a not so great game - it's our youth that makes us so inconsistent.”
Looking ahead, UO returns for its season finale against ASU Saturday at 11 a.m., which also serves as the Ducks' 'Senior Day' that will honor Sari-Jane Jenkins, Melissa Rice and Courtney Shlee before the game. Later Saturday evening, UO will announce its team season awards at its year-end banquet.
Promotions-wise, Saturday's game is a Mother's Day Free Ticket special with all mothers admitted for free in anticipation of Sunday's national holiday.
