Beavers Top Ducks at Mac Court, 64-57

EUGENE, Ore. -- Oregon State snapped the University of Oregon men's basketball team's six-game winning streak in a 64-57 road win Sunday night at McArthur Court in Eugene. The Ducks dropped to 10-5 overall and 2-1 in Pac-10 Conference play. OSU improved to 7-8 overall and 1-2 in league play.
OSU had three players score in double figures, led by Seth Tarver and Daniel Deane who both tallied 15 points. Roeland Schaftenaar added 11 points. Dean had a team-best eight rebounds.
The Beavers shot 41.3 percent from the field (19-of-46), 30.8 percent on 3-pointers (4-of-13). OSU finished 22-of-33 from the free throw line for 66.7 percent. The Ducks were limited to 35.2 percent shooting (19-of-54), making just 4-of-20 on 3-pointers (20 percent). UO made 78.9 percent of its free throws (15-of-19).
Senior guard Tajuan Porter scored a game-high 20 points, but hit just 6-of-20 shots from the field. Sophomore guard Malcolm Armstead had nine points and four assists, but committed six turnovers in the game. Fellow sophomore Michael Dunigan had eight points and eight boards.
The Beavers held a 37-30 rebounding advantage, with 11 of those boards coming on the offensive glass. Both teams committed 10 or more turnovers, Oregon had 12 (to go with 10 assists) while Oregon State had 14 (to go with nine assists). Oregon had a slim 6-4 edge in team steals.
The Ducks opened the game with five turnovers in their first five possessions, falling behind 8-0 in the process. Oregon went on a 7-0 run over a minute and a half span to cut the lead to a point, 8-7. A 3-pointer by freshman forward Jamil Wilson at the 16-minute mark to make it 8-5, followed by Armstead who penetrated the lane and converted a lay-up narrowing the lead to a point.
The Beavers took a 16-10 lead after a 3-pointer by Deane at the 9:35 mark. OSU jumped out to an 11-point advantage, 25-14, on a break-away slam by Seth Tarver with just under five minutes in the half.
Wilson found sophomore forward Jeremy Jacob who scored an interior bucket to move the score to 25-18. After a Lathen Wallace 3-pointer, it was Jacob again scoring in the paint to narrow the lead to eight points at 28-20. Jacob scored six straight Oregon points, the last bucket cutting the OSU lead to 29-22 with two minutes in the half.
OSU's Calvin Haynes closed the first stanza making one of two free throws to give the Beavers a 31-24 halftime lead.
Dunigan had four points and five rebounds to lead the Ducks at the break. UO shot just 29.2 percent over the first 20 minutes (7-of-24), hitting only 1-of-7 on 3-pointers for 14.3 percent. OSU, led offensively by Tarver who scored 11 first-half points, shot 34.5 percent from the floor (10-of-29).
Porter hit his first 3-pointer of the game at the 19-minute mark in the second, cutting the lead to four points at 32-28. Armstead scored four straight points on a pair of layups to keep the Ducks within four points, 37-33, with 16:03 in the game. Porter converted a 3-point play after the media timeout to pull UO within one point, 37-36.
Porter stuck another 3-pointer with 13 minutes remaining to put the OSU advantage at 43-41. Following a 3-pointer by OSU's Haynes, Porter nailed another 3-ball to chop the lead to 51-48 with 7:30 remaining.
A tip-in by Dean gave OSU a 57-48 edge with 4:37 remaining. The Ducks whittled that lead down to three points with 53.2 seconds in the game, with Porter scoring six consecutive points for UO in that stretch.
Terrell Brandon had his jersey retired in a pregame ceremony. It is likely the final Oregon-Oregon State game played at McArthur Court in Eugene.
Oregon (10-5, 2-1 Pac-10) will return to action next weekend with home games against Arizona State and Arizona. The Ducks-Sun Devils contest is scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m., while the UO-UA contest is set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Porter needs 32 more to break the Pac-10 Conference record held by Arizona's Salim Stoudamire who made 342 career 3-pointers from 2002-05. Porter currently ranks fifth on the conference list. Next up on the Pac-10 list are No. 4 Jason Kapono of UCLA (317, 2000-03) and No. 3 Jason Gardner of Arizona (318 threes from 2000-03).
