ASU Defeats Oregon, 76-57

EUGENE, Ore. -- Arizona State's Rihards Kuksiks scored a game-high 25 points in a 76-57 win over the University of Oregon men's basketball team Thursday night in Eugene. The loss dropped the Ducks to 10-6 overall and 2-2 in Pac-10 Conference play. ASU improved to 13-5 on the year and 3-2 in league play.
The Sun Devils shot 48.9 percent from the field (23-of-47), and even better from behind the 3-point arc as they hit 10-of-20 for 50 percent. ASU was 20-of-22 from the free throw line for 90.9 percent. Oregon was limited to 37.3 percent shooting (22-of-59) while making just 28.6 percent of its 3-pointers (4-of-14). The Ducks shot 52.9 percent on free throws (9-of-17).
Ty Abbott scored 16 points in 21 minutes, while Derek Glasser had 12 points and six assists in playing a game-high 36 minutes. Kuksiks and Trent Lockett both tallied five rebounds to lead the Sun Devils.
Oregon was led offensively by junior forward LeKendric Longmire who scored 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting. Longmire also grabbed a team-high six rebounds, five of which were on the offensive glass. Sophomore center Michael Dunigan added seven points and five rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
Abbott hit a pair of 3-pointers in the early going to give ASU the early advantage. His second 3-ball, coming with 16 minutes on the clock, gave the Sun Devils a 9-4 edge.
Arizona State then went on a 9-2 run from 16:29 to 13:02, with Abbott, Kuksiks and Lockett doing the damage. Sophomore forward Drew Wiley, on the receiving end of a pass from fellow sophomore Malcolm Armstead, hit a 3-pointer to stop the run and cut the lead to nine points at 18-9.
ASU went on a 10-0 run over a five-minute span to build its lead to 30-11 with 6:18 to play in the half. Kuksiks hit two 3-pointers for the Sun Devils in that run, as he opened the first 14 minutes of the game going 4-of-5 from the field for 11 points.
The Sun Devils took a 19-point lead into the halftime locker room, 46-27. First-half leaders for Oregon included Porter who had six points on 2-of-8 shooting. Longmire had three points and five rebounds in seven minutes off the bench.
Arizona State shot 57.1 percent from the field (16-of-28) and 61.5 percent on 3-pointers (8-of-13) in the first. ASU had three players in double figures at the break, led by Abbott who had 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting (4-of-6 on 3-pointers).
The Sun Devil lead was built to 20 points early in the second after a 3-pointer by Kuksiks at the 15:55 mark. They would lead by as many as 28 points with 8:21 on the clock, a 71-43 edge which was the Sun Devils largest lead of the game.
Oregon closed the game on a 14-5 run to cut the final deficit to 19 points at 76-57.
The Sun Devils forced the Ducks into 16 turnovers, scoring 24 points off those Oregon mishaps. The Ducks only managed nine points off 15 ASU turnovers. Oregon held the advantage in both rebounds (36-27) and steals (9-8). ASU had 14 assists to UO's 11.
The Ducks (10-6, 2-2 Pac-10) will return to action this Saturday when they host Arizona (8-8, 2-2). Tip-time is slated for 1:30 p.m. (PST) at McArthur Court in Eugene. The Admiral John Dick and Lute Olson will be the honorary captains for that game.

LONGMIRE LEADS THE WAY: LeKendric Longmire led the Ducks with 11 points and also paced his team with six rebounds. It was the first time this season that the same player led the Ducks in points and boards.
ON THE GLASS: Oregon out-rebounded Arizona State 36-27 including an amazing 19-6 on the offensive glass. The Ducks came in averaging 36.3 rebounds per game and +5.9 over their opponents. It was a balanced effort on the boards, with Longmire's six rebounds leading not only the Ducks, but all players. All but one of Longmire's rebounds were offensive.
FEAST OR FAMINE WITH FG%: Oregon has a record of 5-1 when shooting 50% or better from the field with an average margin of victory of 27.2 points per game. (UO lost by five while shooting exactly 50 percent against St. Mary's.) In games where Oregon shot less than 40 percent from the field, the Ducks are winless at 0-4 with an average margin of defeat of 19 points per game.

WARREN HONORED: In Oregon's Mac Court Memories series, former Duck basketball great Charlie Warren was the honorary captain prior to the Arizona State game. Warren was an all-conference and All-American selection in his senior season and ranks 16th in school history with 1,301 points. His 22.2 points per game during the 1961-62 season is the third highest all-time at Oregon. Former Arizona State head coach Bill Frieder was also an honorary captain.
