
Ducks Drop Road Game to Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The California Golden Bears shot 49.2 percent from the field in an 89-57 win over the University of Oregon men's basketball team on Thursday night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. The Golden Bears improved to 12-6 overall and 4-2 in Pac-10 Conference play. The Ducks dropped their fourth straight and moved to 10-8 on the season and 2-4 in league action.
Cal's Patrick Christopher scored a game-high 21 points to lead five players in double figures. All of Christopher's points came in the first half. Theo Robertson scored 18 points, while Jerome Randle and Jamal Boykins scored 11 and 10 points respectively. D.J. Seeley added 11 points off the bench.
The Bears, who made 7-of-17 on 3-pointers and 20-of-29 on free throws, out-scored the Ducks 70-42 over the final 35 minutes of the contest.
Sophomore forward Jeremy Jacob registered a career-high 13 points as the only Duck to score in double figures. Sophomore center Michael Dunigan had nine points and 10 rebounds, just missing his fourth double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Malcolm Armstead added nine points.
The Ducks shot just 38.1 percent from the field (24-of-63), while making a season-low 5.6 percent of their 3-point attempts (1-of-18). UO went 8-of-15 from the charity stripe for 53.3 percent.
The game opened with a frantic up and down pace as California held an early advantage, 6-4, with 15:39 in the first half. The Bears went on a 9-2 run over the next two and a half minutes to jump out to a 15-6 advantage. A lay-up by freshman forward E.J. Singler ended that stretch, putting the score at 15-8 with just over 12 minutes in the half.
Porter drove past Randle and converted a contested lay-up to cut the lead to four points, 17-13, with 7:30 on the clock. Dunigan followed a missed lay-up by Armstead with a two-hand tip-dunk which put the score at 19-15.
An alley-oop from Randle to Christopher with 5:52 on the clock helped ignite a 12-4 run for the Bears. Cal went on to build a 10-point advantage at 31-19 with 3:25 minutes remaining in the half.
Cal closed the final three minutes of the half with a 17-2 run to take a 48-21 lead into the halftime locker room.
The Bears shot 54.5 percent from the field (18-of-33) and 62.5 percent on 3-pointers (5-of-8). Christopher had 21 points in the first half, Robertson added 12 points to pace Cal. Dunigan had a team-high eight points, five rebounds and two steals in playing 16 first-half minutes. The Ducks made 8-of-30 shots for 26.7 percent, missing all seven of their 3-point attempts in the stanza.
The Bears' lead was 30 points with 17:10 remaining in the game, 55-25. Sophomore guard Matt Humphrey, playing his first game since returning from a knee injury, hit a 3-pointer with 13:15 in the second to cut the lead back to 57-32.
California held a 66-36 advantage at the 8:28 mark. Jacob had seven points in a three minute span to provide a spark off the bench for UO.
The Bears had a 76-41 advantage with 5:44 on the clock, a 35-point edge which was the largest of the game.
With under two minutes in the game, freshman forward Jamil Wilson score four straight points on a pair of dunks. The first, a catch and dunk off a lob pass from sophomore guard Garrett Sim. The second, a two-handed jam off a fast break.
Oregon (10-8, 2-4 Pac-10) returns to action Saturday with a road test against Stanford (9-9, 3-3 Pac-10). Tip-time is slated for 5 p.m. from SU's Maples Pavilion.
