EUGENE - The No. 13 University of Oregon volleyball team (15-3, 3-3) saw its eight-match home winning streak come to an end Saturday night as Arizona (14-4, 3-2) won the see-saw battle, 3-2, at McArthur Court.
Arizona claimed the first set, 25-22, then survived Duck wins in the second and third sets (28-26, 25-21) to pull out the fourth and fifth periods by 25-19 and 15-11 counts.
“Arizona outplayed us,” Oregon head coach Jim Moore said. "They were without one of their best players (Whitney Dosty), and they came out and played together as a team, with their backs against the wall. That was big for them, especially when they were down 2-1 and came back. We kept looking behind us on the plays that we missed. We have to get over our mistakes and move on and be focused on the future.”
Redshirt sophomore outside hitter Alaina Bergsma led UO in kills (20) and hitting (.395) for the fourth time in each category, respectively, with all four of those kill honors coming in Pac-10 play.
The first-year Duck and Chandler, Ariz., native also finished with her 10th match with a +.300 hitting mark (including four +.400), and 10th, double-digit kill tally.
Senior outside hitter Heather Meyers paced the team in points (23) for the 11th time in '10, after she added a season-high 18 kills, hit .317 and landed four aces. The Temecula, Calif., native entered the match seeded second nationally in aces per set (0.69), and posted four or more for the fifth time this season.
Meyers also is now tied for ninth all-time for Oregon for aces in a season (48) with Sue Harbor's total in 127 sets in 1983 (compared with Meyers' 64 sets this season), and she also passed former Duck Julie Jeffery's 10th-best mark of 47 in 109 sets from 1989 on Saturday.
For the second straight night and fifth time this year, UO sported a quartet of hitters with +10 kills thanks to totals by sophomore Katherine Fischer (15 kills) and freshman Ariana Williams (10, .286).
Directing the offense, freshman setter Lauren Plum registered a season high in assists (56), and her eight digs just missed her third double-double of the campaign.
Sophomore libero Haley Jacob led in digs (17) for the 15th time this season, and was one of four Ducks in double digits with Fischer (12), sophomore Kellie Kawasaki (11) and Meyers (10). As a result, Fischer and Meyers logged their 10th and sixth double-doubles of the season, respectively, and 14th and 18th career-wise.
Also on defense, sophomore outside hitter Jocelyn Levig posted five blocks – her sixth, team high of the season and her sixth contest in '10 with five blocks or more.
In the team comparison, Arizona held advantages in hitting (.298-.219), digs (71-61) and blocks (14-9), while UO topped the kills (69-65), assists (63-60) and aces (9-5) columns.
A pair of Wildcat hitters ended with +20 kills and +.300 marks - Tiffany Owens (23, .302) and Courtney Karst (22, .320) - and other category leaders included Paige Weber (54 assists, 2 aces), Owens (26 digs), Karst (26 points) and Cursty Jackson (10 blocks).
Saturday's outcome ended a string of home wins dating back to Oregon's 3-2 win over then-No. 7 UCLA last November on Senior Night. Other wins in that string came this season over No. 7 Washington (3-1), Arizona State (3-1), Washington State (3-0), American (3-0), Florida Gulf Coast (3-0), Portland (3-0) and Siena (3-0).
Around the Pac-10 Saturday night, the last pair of unbeaten teams nationally - No. 1 Stanford and No. 7 California - both lost by 3-2 counts, respectively, at No. 12 UCLA and No. 8 USC. Closer to home, Arizona State won 3-2 at Oregon State.
Looking ahead, UO remains at home next week to host Oregon State, Friday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m.
Promotions-wise, the first edition of the annual Civil War series is a 'Buy 1, Get 1 Night'. Fans that show their Bi-Mart card at the ticket window for the OSU match get a free ticket to the Cal match two weeks later (Sat., 10/30, 7pm).
