Ducks Finish Fourth, Wong Third at Fresno Classic
03/10/10 | Men's Golf
FRESNO, Calif. -- No team had a lower score over the final two rounds of the Fresno State Lexus Classic than the University of Oregon, but a slow start over the opening 18 ultimately denied the Ducks a repeat of last week's championship performance.
Oregon, currently ranked third by Golfstat.com and 10th by Golf Week, completed Monday's suspended round at 3-over 358 and shot 361 over the final 18 holes to finish three strokes behind co-champions Brigham Young and San Diego at 23-over 1088. It marked the first time in eight events this season that UO has finished outside of the top three.
"We started out really, really poorly, and then completely turned things around and had a great comeback," said head coach Casey Martin. "It was very windy and cold, and our guys came out a little flat right out of the box, but they pulled it together and competed."
Eugene Wong was in contention for another medalist performance, closing with a 66 in the second round and shooting even par in the third on the par 71, 6,802-yard San Joaquin Country Club course. Wong, who paced UO to the team title with a win of his own a week ago at the USC Invitational, placed third at 2-under 211 and was one of only four golfers to break par during the 54-hole event. BYU's Robbie Fillmore and UC Irvine's John Chin tied for first at 208.
Daniel Miernicki had Oregon's low round Tuesday afternoon with a 70 to finish tied for 14th at 216. Jack Dukeminier (221) tied for 33rd and Sean Maekawa (222) tied for 38th among the 99 golfers representing 16 teams.
Andrew Vijarro (226) saw a top 15 performance evaporate with a final round 80 and finished tied for 52nd. Isaiah Telles (228) closed with a 72 but never recovered from an opening-round 82, tying for 65th.
"Overall, it was not our best, but the guys were resilient," Martin said.
The Ducks will be idle next week before hosting the Oregon Duck Invitational March 22-23 at Shadow Hills Country Club in Junction City.
