EUGENE - The No. 25 University of Oregon softball team (22-5) blanked Seattle (2-19), 4-0, in Thursday's second game for its ninth straight win and fifth shutout in the stretch.
UO's 16th win in its last 17 games was put in jeopardy by the weather, as the two teams endured a 1:48 rain delay in the third inning. Eventually, the all-day shower won out as the umpires called the game in the top of the sixth inning with two outs and a runner on first base.
Duck freshman Jessica Moore (9-2) picked up her fourth straight win for her three innings of relief, and eight of the nine outs she retired came via strikeouts. The Sutter, Calif., native walked two, and allowed no hits in her first combined shutout of 2010 (to go along with four complete game blankings).Junior Brittany Rumfelt started the game and struck out five, walked none and yielded only one hit in her 2.2 innings.
The Oregon offense accounted for single runs in the first and second innings on a sacrifice fly by freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas and a single by freshman left fielder Allie Burger.
In the fourth inning, UO added two more runs on an RBI single by sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers, and a wild throw home by the shortstop on a bases-loaded, fielder's choice ground-out by Pappas.
Overall for the game, Allie Burger went 2-for-2 - her eighth multi-hit game of the season and second-most on the squad.
Five others had single hits - Chambers (1-for-2, 1 RBI), junior first baseman Monique Fuiava (1-for-2, walk), freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard (1-for-3) and junior third baseman Cortney Kivett (1-for-1, 2 runs), while Pappas (0-for-2) had a six-game hitting streak snapped.
Seattle starter Kelsey Reynolds (1-7) walked three, struck out none, allowed seven hits, and three of her four runs allowed were earned.
At the plate for the Redhawks, first baseman Jessica Ulrich claimed the team's only hit in the second inning, a grounder through the right side that was almost erased on Pappas' strike to first base for the attempted putout.
Looking ahead, UO welcomes Idaho State (4-13) for a 3 p.m. home doubleheader at Howe Field on Friday, March 26.
