EUGENE - Raising its winning streak to 11 games, the No. 25 University of Oregon softball team (24-5) continued shine in all phases in Friday's doubleheader finale vs. Idaho State (4-15) in another five-inning 13-0 runaway.
Combining on UO's 18th no-hitter in school history, freshman Jessica Moore (10-2) pitched the first four innings and struck out 11 of the 12 batters she faced. Sophomore Samantha Skillingstad added another 1-2-3 inning in the fifth to seal the perfect game.
At the plate, freshman right fielder Samantha Pappas hit her second homer of the day, a three-run shot - in a 12-run first inning.
Overall in the opening stanza, 15 Ducks came to the plate with 10 players hitting safely thanks to another homer by freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard, doubles by senior designated player Carlyn Re and junior third baseman Cortney Kivett, and singles by freshman left fielder Allie Burger, sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers and junior first baseman Monique Fuiava. Two other Ducks also reached during the inning via walks.
At the five-inning game's end, four Ducks collected multiple hits – Burger (3-for-3, 2 RBI, walk), Kelsey Chambers (2-for-2), Fuiava (2-for-3, 1 RBI) and senior center fielder Neena Bryant (2-for-2).
Others that garnered hits included Pappas (1-for-1, 3 RBI, walk), Howard (1-for-1, 3 RBI), Re (1-for-2, 3 RBI, walk) and Cortney Kivett (1-for-1, 1 RBI).
Idaho State starter Kandis Clesson (3-11) suffered her second loss of the day, was tagged for all 12 earned runs in the first inning, struck out one and walked two. Nora Maschue pitched the final three innings, struck out two, walked five, yielded three hits, and her run allowed was earned.
"It was good to see the bats come alive," Oregon head coach Mike White said, "and we still have a few players who are ready to come around and make it more interesting. Pitching will be vital once the Pac-10 starts next week, so it was good to see everybody pitch well today. We're also continuing to do the little things better that will help win close ball games down the road, so this is a good lead-in to next weekend."
Coincidentally, UO's last two no-hitters came in five-inning wins vs. Idaho State in 2008 by Melissa Rice (8-0) and in 2007 by Alicia Cook (10-0), and the latter was also a perfect game.
Earlier Friday, Pappas drilled her first career grand slam in the 19-0 win over the Bengals that marked a school record for runs scored. Junior left-hander Brittany Rumfelt (5-0) kept her record perfect after she struck out six, walked none and gave up three hits in her three innings of duty.
Looking ahead, UO opens Pac-10 play next week at Oregon State with 3 p.m. single contests, Thursday-Friday, April 1-2, and a noon match-up Saturday, April 3.
