CORVALLIS, Ore. – Running its win streak to 12 games, the No. 21 University of Oregon softball team (25-5, 1-0) opened the Pac-10 slate with an 8-3 win over Oregon State (19-15, 0-1) Thursday afternoon at the OSU Softball Complex.
The Ducks claimed their 19th win in the last 20 games after they scored twice in the first inning, added another run in both the second and sixth innings, then hung four more runs on the scoreboard in the seventh and final inning.
On the mound, Duck freshman Jessica Moore (11-2) ended with 10 strikeouts - her seventh double-digit tally of the season - and tied the 12th-best total in school history for the third time in 2010. Altogether, in her eighth complete game of the season, she gave up five hits, walked one, and one of her three runs allowed was earned.
Entering the game, the Sutter, Calif,. and current Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week ranked ninth in school history in strikeouts in a season, and her current total (137 in 96 innings) is now only 16 away behind the eighth-best tally (153, Connie McMurren, 2000).
At the plate, UO combined on a school record 19 hits – three more than the previous record (16) vs. OSU in '07 – after nine batters hit safely.
Freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard and right fielder Sam Pappas each had a career-high three hits in their five at-bats, and the latter knocked in 2 RBI.
Pappas, the current Pac-10 Player of the Week, logged her team best 13th multi-hit game of the season, and this week's Pac-10 batting leader is now hitting .494 . Howard owns UO's longest current hitting streak ( 4 games) with freshman left fielder Allie Burger who went 2-for-4 Thursday with a walk.
Four other Ducks had two hits – sophomore Kelsey Chambers (2-for-5, 3 RBI), junior first baseman Monique Fuiava (2-for-5, 1 RBI), junior catcher Ashley Kivett (2-for-4) and senior designated player Carlyn Re (2-for-2, 2 RBI).
Three other Oregon players hit safely – Bryant (1-for-4), Moore (1-for-3, 1 RBI) and senior pinch hitter Blair Williamson (1-for-1).
OSU freshman starter Paige Hall (13-13), struck out four, walked two, four of her five runs allowed were earned, and she allowed 13 of UO's 19 hits. Senior Kelly Dyer pitched two innings in the latter part of the game, struck out one, walked none, allowed six hits, and two of her three runs allowed were earned.
Thursday's win marked the first conference victory for first-year Duck head coach Mike White who had helped UO to a pair of 2-1 series wins his first two seasons with the program as an assistant coach in 2003 and '04.
Looking ahead, UO has two more single games at Corvallis, Friday at 3 p.m., and Saturday at noon.
