EUGENE - Heading into the seventh inning with a slim 3-2 lead, a six-run last at-bat helped the No. 1 University of Washington softball team (34-3, 6-1) end No. 17 UO's perfect run at home Friday night.
Oregon (29-7, 5-2) entered the game with a 11-0 mark at Howe Field this season, including a 3-0 prior conference record after last week's sweep of then-No. 13 California.
But this time the Ducks stranded eight runners on base, while the Huskies' All-America senior starter Danielle Lawrie (24-1) allowed multiple base runners in the same inning only once.
Washington scored first in the second inning when the lead-off hitter reached on an error by the third baseman, advanced on a stolen base and single, then scored from third base on a passed ball.
In the third, Duck freshman starter Jessica Moore (13-3) was relieved with one out after a walk and pair of doubles led to two more runs. Sophomore Mikayla Endicott came in and struck out the next two batters to end the inning.
In the fourth, UO closed within 3-2 on the seventh homer of the season by sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers, a two-run shot just over the left field fence off Lawrie. The batter before, junior Monique Fuaiva, opened the inning by lining a hard grounder to left center field, then beat the throw to second base for her team-leading 10th double of the campaign (and only two shy of the 10th-best mark in school history (12)).
Two outs and two batters later, freshman second baseman Kaylan Howard and junior third baseman Cortney Kivett reached via infield singles, but a strikeout ended the inning.
On the mound for UO, Endicott cruised until the seventh inning when UW's fifth hitter, Shawna Right, drove a three-run homer over the right field fence.
Although the runs were earned, the Ducks could have already been at-bat.
Three batters earlier, Endicott fielded a hard come-backer up the middle and immediately threw to second base to start a potential double play, but Howard rushed to meet the throw and wasn't able to touch the bag with her foot.
Endicott responded by getting the second out on a strikeout looking of UW's leading hitter Jenn Salling (who entered the game with a .390 batting average). However, a pair of walks and single preceded Wright's ninth round-tripper of 2010.
Regardless of the eventual outcome, Endicott's strikeout total (9) matched her career high that came in a seven-inning complete game last season vs. Utah. The Roseburg, Ore., native gave up six hits, walked two, and all six runs allowed were earned.
Junior Brittany Rumfelt relieved Endicott and retired the final Husky batter via strikeout.
On the mound for Washington, the 2008 Canadian Olympian Lawrie struck out 12 in her 23rd complete game of the season, yielded seven hits, and both runs allowed were earned.
Moore's loss Friday ended a seven-game winning streak. In her 2.1 innings, she struck out three, allowed four hits, walked one, and two of her three runs allowed were earned.
At the plate for UO, senior center fielder Neena Bryant (2-for-3) moved into seventh place on the Duck hits chart with her 196th and 197th career hits, and also walked. The Placentia, Calif., native put together her fourth multi-hit game in her last eight contests and ninth overall of 2010.
Four other Ducks hit safely - Chambers (1-for-3, 2 RBI), junior catcher Kaitlin Vitek (1-for-2, walk), Howard (1-for-3) and Cortney Kivett (1-for-2). The Valencia, Calif., native Vitek has now hit safely in five straight games and is hitting a team-high .545 (6-for-11) in the stretch. She also threw out her first base runner of the season in a steal attempt to end the fourth inning.
Six Husky batters hit safely, and clean-up hitter Niki Williams (2-for-4, 3 RBI) was the only opposing hitter with multiple hits.
Looking ahead, the two teams return to meet for single games on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at noon at Howe Field.
Promotion-wise, Saturday's contest is a Little League / ASA Day. Youth can wear their little league or softball jersey to the game and get in free.
Sunday's contest is 'Pink Out Howe' Day in recognition of breast cancer awareness month. Fans that show their Bi-Mart card at the ticket window at the game can receive admission for two adults and two children for only $10.
