LOS ANGELES – In their three-game series opener, the No. 5 UCLA softball team (34-9, 8-5) utilized a six-run fifth and three-run sixth inning for an 11-4 comeback win Friday night vs. No. 18 Oregon (31-11, 7-6).
Senior centerfielder Neena Bryant put UO up early with her sixth home run of the season in the first inning, and also raised her career tally to 34 – third-most in school history and only three shy of the school record.
The shot by the Placentia, Calif., native stood as her fourth in Pac-10 play – tied for most on the team with sophomore shortstop Kelsey Chambers – and all of Bryant's blasts have come in the last eight games.
After UCLA scored two runs in the second, Oregon went back ahead 4-2 with three runs in the third inning. Freshman left fielder Allie Burger opened the inning with a single, Bryant followed with a double and Kelsey Chambers walked to load the bases with no outs.
After a pop-up, Pappas rebounded from an 0-2 count to draw a walk and force in a run, and junior designated player Ashley Kivett followed with an RBI single up the middle. After the Bruins removed starting pitcher Donna Kerr, junior catcher Kaitlin Vitek added another RBI infield single off reliever Megan Langenfeld to score Oregon's final run of the game.
Bryant (3-for-4) banged out a season-high number of hits and had an RBI and two runs.
Kivett added a 2-for-3 evening, and three other Ducks hit safely – Burger (1-for-4), Chambers (1-for-3) and Vitek (1-for-2).
On the mound for Oregon, freshman Jessica Moore (13-7) pitched the first three innings, struck out seven, walked three, gave up eight hits, and five of her seven runs allowed were earned.
Sophomore Mikayla Endicott got the next two outs, gave up one hit, one walk and no runs. Junior Brittany Rumfelt worked the next inning, struck out none, walked none, allowed two hits and one earned run.
Sophomore Samantha Skillingstad pitched the final 1.1 innings, struck out two, walked two, yielded two hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned.
In her 3.1 innings of relief, Langenfeld (6-1) struck out two, walked one, gave up three hits and no runs. Kerr pitched the first 2.2 innings, struck out one, walked two, gave up five hits, and all four of her runs allowed were earned.
Eight Bruins hit safely, and three had multiple hits – Gionna DiSalvatore (3-for-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Dany Yudin (2-for-4, 1 run) and B.B. Bates (2-for-4, 1 run, 1 RBI).
Looking ahead, the two teams return for single games at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles Saturday at 6 p.m. and Sunday at noon. Live stats will be available at the www.UCLAbruins.com website.
