Theisen, Eaton Take Large Leads at Pac-10 Multis

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Ashton Eaton and Brianne Theisen took commanding leads in the Pacific-10 Conference decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, Saturday at Edwards Stadium.
Theisen used a personal best in the high jump of 5-11.5 to score 3,600 points. She had a 338 point lead on Samantha Henderson of Arizona State, who was at 3,262.
Theisen, from Humboldt, Sask., won all four events on Saturday.
The defending Pac-10 champion took the 100 meter hurdles in 13.74 before her PR in the high jump. Her clearance ranked tied for third overall in Oregon history.
Theisen also won the shot put with a throw of 39-5 and finished the day with a win in the 200 meters in 24.64.
Also in the heptathlon, senior Erin Funkhouser was eighth with 2,907 points. She set personal bests in all four events.
The Grass Valley, Ore., native ran 15.03 in the 100 meter hurdles, tied for fourth with a clearance at 5-3.25 in the high jump, placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 33-7.5 and ran 26.24 in the 200 meters.
Eaton won four of the five decathlon events to score 4,220 points and built a first-day lead of 362 points. California's Michael Morrison was second with 3,858 points, Washington's Jeremy Taiwo was third with 3,788 points and Marshall Ackley of Oregon was fourth with 3,638 points.
Eaton, the two-time defending champion in the decathlon, won the 100 meters in 10.59, took first in the long jump with a leap of 24-4.5 and was atop the shot put list with a throw of 41-10.75.
After a clearance of 6-4.25 in the high jump, the senior from Bend, Ore., wrapped up the day with a win in the 400 meters in 47.25.
Ackley used a decathlon personal best throw in the shot put of 40-7.75 to stand fourth after day one. He had both the second-best shot put and 400 meters, 49.71, on Saturday. The Nyssa, Ore., native was also third in the 110 meter hurdles in 11.15.
The Pac-10 heptathlon and decathlon conclude Sunday.
