EUGENE – Several returners showed their experience and some freshmen showed promise in the Oregon women's tennis team's 7-0 victory over Portland State at the Student Tennis Center on Friday.
The Ducks (1-0) won all nine matches and only dropped one singles set to win their season opener for the third year in a row.
UO wasted little time in getting the doubles point, despite working with two new pairings. Pavlina Smatova and Rabea Stueckemann teamed up for the first time and defeated Yuki Sugiyama and Anya Dalkin 8-4 at No. 1, Siobhan Cavan and Molly McDevitt pulled out an 8-3 win over Caitlin Stocking and Marti Pellicano at No.2 and Trudie du Toit and Pascale Neubert cruised to an 8-2 win over Nayantara Vadali and Marina Todd.
The Ducks put their foot on the accelerator in singles play with three players winning their first set 6-0. Du Toit dominated Caitlin Stocking (6-0, 6-0) at No. 3, Stueckemann cruised past Marti Pellicano (6-0, 6-2) at No. 4 and Neubert won her first collegiate singles match over Nayantara Vadali (6-0, 7-5) at No. 5. The Ducks also got straight set wins out of Pavlina Smatova (6-3, 6-4 over Yuki Sugiyama) at No. 1 and Julia Metzger (6-3, 6-2 over Anya Dalkin) at No. 2. Molly McDevitt also dispatched Marina todd (6-3, 3-6, 6-0) at No. 6.
“Anytime you can win 7-0 it's obviously a good day,” head coach Paul Reber said. “We took care of business both in singles and doubles and saw a lot of good things even with some players out of the lineup. Trudie and Rabea both played outstanding and Pascale got off to a good start in singles play.”
The Ducks return to action on Sunday when they host Portland at the Student Tennis Center. That match starts at 3 p.m.
