EUGENE – A strong effort from the top three singles players propelled the Oregon women's tennis team to a 6-1 victory over Portland at the Student Tennis Center on Sunday.
The Ducks (2-0) won seven of nine matches to complete their perfect home weekend against the Portland schools.
Oregon took two of three doubles matches, all of which were tight throughout. Pavlina Smatova and Patricia Skowronski won their first match of the dual season together, defeating Lacey Pflibsen and Alice Tucker, 8-5, at the No. 1 spot. The Ducks secured the doubles point with an 8-5 win out of Trudie du Toit and Siobhan Cavan at No. 3.
UO's top three singles players put little doubt into their victories to give the Ducks a dual victory. Smatova dominated Pflibsen (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1, Julia Metzger defeated Sabine Fuchs (6-2, 6-2) at No. 2 and Skowronski downed Tucker (6-2, 6-1) at No. 3 to give the Ducks the win.
“We got very strong efforts out of our top three singles players today,” head coach Paul Reber said. “Pavlina, Julia and Patricia all played great, only losing seven games between them. We need those three to continue to play at that level to continue winning.”
Also winning in singles play were du Toit (7-6 [7-5], 7-5 over Stephanie Fuchs) at No. 4 and Rabea Stueckemann (5-7, 6-2, (10-6)) at No. 5 to round out the Ducks' scoring.
Oregon returns to the court on Friday when it hosts Iowa State and Montana.
