Ducks Stay Undefeated With Doubleheader Sweep
01/29/11 | Women's Tennis
EUGENE – The Oregon women's tennis team wrapped up its season-opening home stand with a doubleheader sweep over Iowa State and Montana on Friday.
The Ducks (4-0) defeated the Cyclones, 6-1, and blanked the Grizzlies, 7-0, to stay undefeated in dual play.
Pavlina Smatova, Patricia Skowronski and Lana Buttner each went 2-0 on the day and the Ducks won 16 of 18 matches on the day.
“It was great for us to pull off the doubleheader sweep,” head coach Paul Reber said. “It's never easy having two duals in one day. Lana is getting stronger and looking good today. It will be fun to watch her development through the year.”
Clutch Doubles Play Propels Ducks Past Cyclones
Dominant play out of Pavlina Smatova, Patricia Skowronski and Trudie du Toit propelled the Ducks to a 5-2 victory over Iowa State at the Student Tennis Center in the first part of their doubleheader.
The trio posted straight set victories during singles and won crucial doubles matches to help the Ducks secure the doubles point.
Du Toit teamed with Siobhan Cavan at No. 3 doubles and downed the Cyclones' pairing of Jenna Langhorst and Marie-Christine Chartier 8-5. ISU claimed the No. 2 doubles match and its top pairing of Tessa Lang and Maria Fernanda Macedo held a 7-6 lead over No. 59 Pavlina Smatova and Patricia Skowronski. The Ducks' top duo broke the Cyclones' serve and won the next two games to rally for a 9-7 win to give UO the doubles point.
Smatova , Skowronski and du Toit rolled through their singles matches at No. 1, 3 and 4, respectively. Smatova defeated Erin Karonis (6-1, 6-3), Skowronski cruised to a straight-set win over Lang (6-2, 6-1) and du Toit dropped Chartier (6-3, 6-2) to clinch the victory.
Oregon also got a singles victory out of freshman Lana Buttner, who won her first-collegiate dual match over Liza Wischer (7-5, 6-3) to round out the Ducks' team scoring.

Ducks Overpower Grizzlies, 7-0
Oregon won all nine matches, including six straight-set singles victories in the nightcap on Friday.
The Ducks got quick doubles victories out of top pairing Pavlina Smatova and Patricia Skowronski (8-5 over Whitney Paluch and Rebecca Bran), No. 2 duo Julia Metzger and Rabea Stueckemann (8-5 over Heather Davidson and Ashley Mackey) and No. 3 pairing Siobhan Cavan and Trudie du Toit (8-4 over Ashley Gibson and Constance Alexander) to wrap up the doubles point.
Oregon was equally dominant in singles play. The top three of Smatova (6-2, 6-1 over Constance Alexander), Skowronski (6-2, 6-3 over Rebecca Bran) and Metzger (6-2, 6-4 over Heather Davidson) posted straight anchored the top half of the lineup.
The Ducks' makeshift back half of the singles lineup was just as impressive. A late lineup change moved freshmen Stueckemann and Lana Buttner up a spot to No. 4 and 5, respectively, while thrusting freshman Pascale Neubert into the lineup at No. 6. The newcomers all showed flashes of dominance with Stueckemann defeating Whitney Paluch (6-1, 6-4), Buttner cruising past Ashley Mackey (6-1, 6-0) and Neubert dispatching Lauren Gibson (6-2, 6-4).
“We're more comfortable with our depth and pulling one of our starting six singles players out of the lineup doesn't affect us as much as it did in the past," Reber said.
Oregon is on the road for its next eight matches and does not play at home again until March 11. The Ducks are off until Feb. 12 when they face Oklahoma.
