No. 24 Sooners Hand Ducks First Loss of the Season
02/13/11 | Women's Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Several players showed promise on an individual level, but the Oregon women's tennis team suffered its first dual loss of the season, 5-2, to No. 24 Oklahoma in a neutral-site match in Minneapolis, Minn., on Saturday.
The Ducks got an impressive upset victory out of their 59th-ranked doubles pairing of Pavlina Smatova and Patricia Skowronski, who upset the Sooners' No. 31 duo of Ana-Maria Constantinescu and Alice Radu, 8-7 (7-1), at No. 1 doubles. Unfortunately, that was the only doubles match that went Oregon's way as Oklahoma took the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions.
UO got singles wins out of Skowronski (7-6 [7-5], 6-1 over Alice Radu) at No. 2 and Rabea Stuckemann (6-2, 7-5 over Maria Klashnikova) at No. 5 for its team points on the day. The top match between Smatova and Constantinescu was tightly contested, but Constantinescu had just a little more on the day as she sent the Ducks' senior to her first dual loss, 6-4, 6-4.
Oregon struggled at the No. 3, 4 and 6 spots as Oklahoma took all those matches in straight sets and only dropped a combined eight games in six sets.
“I'm very pleased with the performance of Pavlina and Patricia, that's a very big doubles win for them,” head coach Paul Reber said. Patricia had a good win in singles as well. Overall, we knew we had to play well to win and we did that in some spots, but not in others where we needed to. On our best day, I think we are right there with them and we showed that at points today.”
The Ducks return to the court on Sunday morning when they face No. 73 Minnesota at 11 a.m. CT (9 a.m. PT).
