Ducks Edge Portland State, 75-71
11/21/11 | Women's Basketball
Johnson notched her fourth straight double-double dating back to last season with her 30 points and a career-high 19 rebounds.
Oregon (3-0) took a single-digit 38-29 advantage into intermission and was able to push the lead out to 14 points in the second half after junior Laura Stanulis knocked down a jumper four minutes into play. But the Vikings (2-1) fought back and put together a 13-2 run from that point on that cut the UO lead to a mere three points at 46-43.
The Ducks went on a stretch after Johnson knocked down Oregon's first three pointer of the game to push the lead back out to nine (53-44), but the feisty Vikings worked their way back into the game and cut the deficit back down to five despite Johnson and Loera tallying treys with less than two minutes left.
PSU's Kate Lanz and Karley Lampman put up two quick buckets to get the Vikings within one at 70-69, but Courtney VanBrocklin fouled Johnson, sending her to the charity stripe. Johnson knocked down both free throws to extend Oregon's lead to three with 45 seconds left to play.
Lanz hit a jumper to give the Vikings one more shot to get the win and called a timeout to attempt to set up a play to stop the Ducks, but Loera stepped up and put down the trey to cement the win for Oregon.
In the first half of play, UO put together a 27-16 run down the stretch to give the Ducks their first-half advantage. In that run, Johnson had 10 of Oregon's 27 points.
Oregon finished the game shooting 40 percent from the field, tallying 30 shots on 75 attempts. The Ducks struggled from both the free-throw line (11-17) and three-point line (4-20) throughout the game.
UO posted a dominate showing in the paint, working hard to get 42 points compared to PSU's24.
In addition to Johnson, senior Jasmin Holliday scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
The Vikings had four players post double figures with Shauneice Samms and Lampman leading with 20 and 18, respectively.
