Tight Singles Defeats Send Ducks to Second Straight Loss
02/13/11 | Women's Tennis
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Close defeats at the top of the singles lineup were too much to overcome as the Oregon women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 73 Minnesota on Sunday.
The Ducks' (4-2) top three singles players each dropped their matches in straight sets, though all of them were tightly contested throughout the afternoon.
UO got another strong performance from top doubles pairing Pavlina Smatova and Patricia Skowronski. The No. 59 ranked duo improved to 5-0 in the dual season with an 8-6 win over Natallia Pintusava and Alessandra Ferrazzi at the top spot.
Despite the win up top, the Golden Gophers claimed the doubles point with an 8-5 win at the No. 2 position and an 8-3 decision at No. 3.
The Ducks got their points with singles victories out of freshmen Rabea Stuckemann at No. 5 and Pascale Neubert at No. 6. Stuckemann went 2-0 on the weekend with her win today coming against Doron Muravnik, 6-4, 6-3. Neubert got her victory in impressive comeback fashion by rallying against Mariana Spilca (1-6, 6-4, 6-4).
Sunday's dual was won at the top three spots as all three UO competitors fell in close fashion. Smatova dropped her match at the top spot to No. 51 Natallia Pintusava (7-6 [7-4], 7-5), Skowronski fell to Alessandra Ferrazzi (7-6 [7-4], 6-2) at No. 2 and Julia Metzger was defeated by Magdalena Wiecha (6-4, 6-4) at No. 3.
