Ducks Outlast Buffaloes in 4-3 Thriller
02/19/11 | Women's Tennis
BOULDER, Colo. – Sometimes the hardest point to get is the last one needed for a win.
The Oregon women's tennis team's dual at Colorado went down to the final match and the Ducks silenced the Buffaloes' to pull out a 4-3 win on Friday afternoon.
After UO (5-2) jumped out to a 3-0 lead, CU won three-straight singles matches to bring the dual down to the No. 6 singles match between freshman Lana Buttner and Colorado's Carla Manzi Tenorio, which Buttner won in three-set fashion (6-3, 1-6, 6-2) to clinch an Oregon win.
The Ducks also posted victories at No. 1 and 2 singles, where No. 106 Pavlina Smatova cruised past Abbie Probert (6-2, 6-2) and Patricia Skowronski took down Michala Hedelund Jensen (6-1, 6-4) in straight sets.
“I think the team overcame some adversity today,” head coach Paul Reber said. “Playing in altitude and coming away with a victory is tough, but we pulled it out. We got a great effort out of Pavlina and Patricia in doubles play and they were also the first ones done with singles, which gave everyone a little bit of breathing room. Lana did a nice job battling at the end and responded to the pressure of the dual being tied at 3-3 by winning her match.”
The doubles point also went down to the wire as the teams split the matches at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Trudie du Toit and Julia Metzger got Oregon on the board first with an 8-6 win over Ania Anuszkiewicz and Kristina Schleich. With the point coming down to the top pairing, No. 45 Patricia Skowronski and Pavlina Smatova battled went to a tiebreaker against Hedelund Jensen and Probert. The UO duo improved to 6-0 in dual play by winning the tiebreaker, 7-3, to earn a 9-8 victory and clinch what turned out to be a crucial doubles point.
Oregon returns to the court on Saturday morning when it faces New Mexico. The dual begins at 10 a.m.
