No. 6 Cal Blanks Oregon
02/27/11 | Women's Tennis
BERKELEY, Calif. – For the second-consecutive day, the Oregon women's tennis team faced a difficult matchup against a top-10 team as the Ducks fell to No. 6 California, 7-0 on Saturday.
The loss drops UO to 6-4 on the season and 0-2 in the Pac-10, with the other league loss coming against top-ranked Stanford on Friday.
“Overall, it was a tough road trip,” head coach Paul Reber said. “It's good to face teams like Stanford and California, even with the results not going our way. We competed a lot better today than we did yesterday and we did an awful lot better than the last time we came here two years ago. We held true to our mantra of 'One Day Better' even though we lost. Now we'll come back and focus on preparing for Arizona.”
Doubles play featured some tight matches, but Cal ultimately all three battles. The Ducks' top duo of Patricia Skowronski and Pavlina Smatova (No. 45 in the nation) suffered their second consecutive setback, 8-4, to the fifth-ranked pairing of Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova. That match clinched the doubles point for the Golden Bears after their No. 3 team of Anett Schutting and Marina Cossou dispatched Pascale Neubert and Rabea Stuckemann, 8-4.
Cal's singles depth proved too much for Oregon, as the Golden Bears got straight-set wins the top five spots. Cal clinched the dual win quickly by getting victories at No. 5, 4 and 2 singles while only dropping six combined games.
Lana Buttner provided a strong showing for UO and nearly gave the Ducks a point when she took Alice Duranteau to three sets. Buttner posted a dominant, 6-0, win in the first set, but was edged out by Duranteau in the end, 0-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Oregon's top singles player, No. 106 Smatova suffered her second-straight setback to close the day. Falling to fourth-ranked Juricova 6-4, 6-2.
The Ducks travel to Arizona next weekend for a pair of Pac-10 duals. The trip begins with a matchup with the Arizona Wildcats on March 4.
