02/04/11 | Women's Basketball
SEATTLE – A valiant and gutsy effort from Oregon guard Nia Jackson was not enough on Thursday night as the Ducks were outdone in overtime falling to Washington, 90-76, at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Ducks (12-9, 3-7) were outscored 16-2 in the overtime period as Jackson exited the extra period early on after battling knee trouble for the entire second half.
Washington (9-10, 4-6) was led by junior guard Kristi Kingma's 20 points, while Mackenzie Argens and Regina Rogers both recorded double-doubles. Argens scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Huskies, while Rogers scored 18 points off the bench and found her way to 10 boards.
Oregon led 72-66 after a 3-pointer from freshman Deanna Weaver with 2:08 to play in regulation, but Washington capitalized on its opportunities to take the game into extra time.
Marjorie Heard, who scored 13 points off the bench for UW, completed a three-point play after an offensive rebound with 1:19 left in regulation, and knocked down a second jumper as the Huskies closed 72-71 with 30 seconds on the clock.
Washington then sent Weaver to the line with 24.2 seconds to play, and the freshman knocked down the 1-of-2 as Oregon led 73-71.
After a missed jumper by Sarah Morton, a loose ball was eventually run down by Heard for one of her seven rebounds. She kicked it out to Kingma as the junior buried a trey with 11 seconds left on the clock as UW led 74-73.
The Ducks called a timeout with 4.7 seconds to play before Jackson took the ball to the rack on Oregon's final possession of regulation. Jackson was hammered in the lane and sent to the line with 1.3 seconds left, hitting 1-of-2 to send the game into overtime.
Jackson scored a game-high 22 points and dished a team-leading four assists. In front of her hometown crowd, Jackson shot 7-of-16 from the floor and her only miss from the charity stripe on a 7-of-8 performance was at the end of regulation.
The Pac-10's leading scorer was troubled by her right knee in overtime after the collision on the last play of regulation, and exited the game not to return.
Jackson played just 10 minutes in the second half due to discomfort in her left knee.
Oregon junior forward Amanda Johnson recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds, tying a career high knocking down four buckets from long distance.
Weaver chipped in 13 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals off the bench while knocking down both of her attempts from 3-point range.
In overtime, Oregon was without senior forward Victora Kenyon who fouled out with 6:23 to play in regulation, as well as senior forward Nicole Canepa who fouled out 3:24 to go in extra time.
The Ducks used a 24-5 run built over an 8:11 span to turn a one-point deficit into an 18-point advantage, leading 51-33 after Johnson drained a 3-pointer with 15:53 remaining in regulation. The Ducks opened the second half on a 13-2 run after closing the first on an 11-3 run.
But Oregon could not hold on to that advantage with Jackson out of the game, and freshman Ariel Thomas picking up her fourth foul with 14:56 in regulation.
Washington retook the lead, 56-55, at the 8:04 mark as Heard knocked down two baskets from the charity stripe. The Huskies outscored Oregon 23-4 after the Ducks had built their largest advantage of the contest.
With Washington ahead, Jackson reentered the contest at the 7:55 mark to run the point for the Ducks after having left the game with 18:13 in the game due to discomfort in her left knee.
The Ducks were outrebounded 48-42 as Washington scored 17 second-chance points. The Huskies also boasted a 38-22 scoring advantage in the paint.
Oregon outscored Washington 11-3 in the final four minutes of the first half, heading into the locker room with a 38-31 advantage.
Jackson led all players with 15 first-half points, knocking down a 3-pointer to record the first basket of the game, as well as scoring UO's first seven points.
In a matter of 27 seconds, Oregon went from trailing by four, 22-18 with 7:48 on the clock, to leading by five, 27-22, as a trio of Ducks knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers. Weaver drained the first, before a Washington turnover led to a second trey from Thomas. Washington then committed a second turnover on the baseline, leading to Ashley Buis' bucket from long distance with 7:21 to play.
Charmaine Barlow and Rogers led the Huskies with six points apiece in the first half, as Washington shot 46.4 percent (13-of-28) from the floor compared to Oregon at 38.9 percent (14-of-36).
The teams combined to turn the ball over 23 times in the first half, but Oregon was able to take advantage scoring 22 points off Washington's 12 miscues.
Oregon returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Pullman, Wash., to play Washington State at Beasley Coliseum with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Ducks return home to Matthew Knight Arena on Thursday, Feb. 10, to host currently 10th-ranked UCLA with tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m.
