Albany Holds off Oregon, 7-6

ALBANY, N.Y. –
The Oregon lacrosse team was locked in a defensive struggle and took a second-half lead against the top defensive squad in the country, but No. 14 Albany rallied late to send the Ducks to a 7-6 loss on Sunday.
Alex Breiner led the Ducks (4-6) with four goals and Jana Drummond tallied the other two. Sunday's loss is Oregon's third straight, all of which have been by two goals or less.
The teams combined for only two goals and 10 shots in the first half as defense dominated the first 30 minutes. Albany's Rachel Burek opened the scoring 3:15 in and Breiner tied the score with 12:52 gone by to cap the first half scoring.
The Great Danes got two goals from Jodi Battaglia in a 42-second span to take a 3-1 lead at the 4:31 mark of the second half. After a Breiner tally cut the deficit to 3-2, Taylor Frink put Albany back up by two goals at the 7:38 mark.
Oregon grabbed its first lead of the day by scoring three-straight goals. Drummond started the rally with her 24th goal of the year at the 8:54 mark and Breiner scored the next two to make it 5-4 midway through the second half.
An Albany free position attempt by Battaglia tied the contest at 5-5 with 8:24 left and Michelle Primomo put the Great Danes up 6-5 only 48 seconds later.
Undeterred, Drummond tied the game up once again 25 seconds later, making it 6-6 late in regulation. The Ducks had one offensive possession with the game tied, but were unable to create a shot.
Following a clear, Primomo put Albany ahead for good with 3:51 remaining by converting a feed from Frink. The Ducks won the ensuing draw control, but were unable to create any shots for the rest of the game.
Albany had a slight, 18-17, advantage in shots for the game and also edged Oregon, 14-12, in ground balls. The Great Danes also won the battle of draw controls, 9-6, and turnovers, 12-10.
Caroline Federighi made her first-career start and clocked all 60 minutes in goal for the Ducks. The freshman turned aside seven of the 14 shots she faced.
Oregon is off until April 8, when it opens conference play at California.
