
Keudell Commanding For UO, Shuts Down Huskies

EUGENE, Ore. –
Oregon's starting pitcher delivered a second straight commanding
performance, but this time the Ducks' offense was able to back him up as
UO shut out Washington 9-0 on Sunday afternoon at PK Park.
With the win, Oregon
(15-14, 1-5) snaps a five-game losing streak and picks up its first win
in Pac-10 play. It was also the Ducks' fifth shutout victory of the
season.
Washington (9-20, 2-4) still claims the series victory with extra-inning victories on Friday and Saturday night.
Junior right-hander Alex Keudell (4-3) earned the win, pitching eight shutout innings of baseball. He surrendered just three hits and issued two walks while striking out six.
Keudell at one time
retired 14 consecutive batters starting with the fourth inning before
allowing a two-out single in the eighth.
Oregon tallied 12 hits on the afternoon, including five for extra bases.
The highlight was senior Shawn Peterson
's solo home run in the bottom of the fifth that gave the Ducks a 3-0 lead. It was the Eugene native's first career home run.
Junior Danny Pulfer
was 3-for-5 and drove in four runs for the Ducks with a one-run single
in the second, a one-run double in the sixth and a two-run single in the
seventh.
KC Serna
was 1-for-2 with two runs driven in, two walks and two runs scored, while Peterson was 2-for-3.
J.J. Altobelli
and Brett Thomas
also picked up two hits apiece.
Washington starter
Austin Voth (1-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits and
one walk while striking out four. Zach Wright, Terik Gofinch and Jeff
Gonzales all appeared in relied for the Huskies.
Brando Tessar
closed out the game for Oregon on the mound in the ninth.
Oregon took a 2-0
lead in second as the Ducks strung together four hits. Altobelli led
things off with a single through the left side and scored on Brett Hambright
's double down the left field line. Thomas put runners on the corners
with an infield bunt, setting the table for Pulfer's RBI single to right
center.
In the bottom of the sixth with Wright taking over on the mound for Voth, Oregon's two-out rally scored two runs on three hits as UO took a 5-0 advantage. Thomas began the rally with a double over the head of Washington center fielder Spencer Rogers, and scored on Serna's single to right field. With Serna moving to second on the throw home, he scored
Oregon's fifth run as Pulfer send a double to the wall in left.
Oregon put up a
four-spot in the seventh with Gofinch on the mound. After a double, hit
by pitch and walk, the bases were loaded with two outs for Serna who
worked a 3-2 count before being issued ball four as Peterson was walked
in. Pulfer then shot a two-run single up the middle as Jack Marder
and Thomas came around to score. Serna scored Oregon's fourth run of the inning, scoring from third on a wild pitch.
Washington was held to three hits.
Oregon will play
four consecutive games on the road beginning with the Pilots on
Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. from Joe Etzel Field.
The Ducks will then travel south to USC for a three-game series with the
Trojans that begins Friday at Dedeaux Field.
