Opportunities Slip Past Ducks in Loss to Cougars

The Oregon women's tennis team was unable to sustain a strong start in doubles play onto the singles courts in a 5-2 loss to Washington State on Saturday.
Saturday's setback was the Ducks' Pac-10 finale and drops them to 7-14 overall and 1-7 in league duals.
Oregon got a dominant effort from its top doubles pairing of Pavlina Smatova and Patricia Skowronski. The duo picked up their 21st win of the year by dispatching 76th-ranked Luidmila Vasilieva and Ksenia Googe 8-2. The Ducks clinched the doubles point on the strength of a gritty 8-6 win from Julia Metzger and Trudie du Toit on court two over Andjela Kankaras and Olga Musilovich.
The Cougars picked up steam in singles play and posted straight-set victories at No. 5, 2 and 4 singles to go up 3-1.
The final three singles matches were all three-set battles. Smatova, No. 102 nationally in singles play, rallied to defeat Elisabeth Fournier (4-6, 6-4, 6-2).
Julia Metzger and Lana Buttner each won their first sets at No. 3 and 6 singles, respectively, and each had match point opportunities. However, neither was able to close out their matches as Buttner fell to Jessica Gomez (0-6, 6-1, 7-6 [9-7]) and Metzger dropped a three-set battle to Googe (4-6, 7-5, 6-3).
Oregon concludes its dual season on Sunday when it hosts No. 48 Sacramento State at noon.
