EUGENE, Ore. – Washington's Ty Afenir was hitless in five attempts heading into the 14th, but his one-run single plated the go-ahead score as Washington prevailed 4-3 in 14 innings at PK Park on Friday night.
The Huskies (8-19, 1-3) take the opening game of the series with the win, while Oregon (14-13, 0-4) is now on a four-game losing streak – the longest for the Ducks this season.
With the game tied at 3-3 heading into the top of the 14th, Troy Scott reached on a throwing error by KC Serna
. He was sacrificed to second and moved to third on a ground out before scoring unearned on Afenir's drive up the middle.
Oregon right-hander Kellen Moen
(1-2) took the loss, allowing one unearned run in six innings on the hill. Moen allowed just four hits and issued one walk while striking out six after coming on in the top of the ninth.
The Ducks outhit the Huskies 12-7, but left 11 runners stranded, including five in extra innings.
Oregon is now 1-3 in extra innings games this season and 3-7 in games decided by one run.
Washington right-hander Adam Cimber (2-2) tossed four and 2/3 innings of relief, holding the Ducks scoreless on four hits and one walk.
Oregon stranded five runners in extra innings on five hits and two walks.
In the bottom of the 14th, Brett Thomas
led things off with a single and was sacrificed to second, but was thrown out after failing to get back to the bag in time after Danny Pulfer
flied out to right field.
Freshman Aaron Jones
led Oregon at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort with two runs scored, while Shawn Peterson
was 2-for-4 with two runs driven in.
Trailing by a run, 3-2, in the bottom of the eighth, freshman Stefan Sabol
led off the bottom of the eighth with a single to left, and was sacrificed to second by Jones before being driven as Jack Marder
laced a single down the first base line that fell under diving UW first baseman Eric Peterson.
UO's Shawn Peterson
then hammered a shot to right that Chase Anselment made a diving grab on before coming up throwing to get Marder off the bag at first for the inning's final out.
In the bottom of the 10th, Danny Pulfer
continued his 12-game hitting streak with a one-out single up the middle. Washington brought Jeff Brigham out of the pen to relieve Tyler Kane, and the right-hander walked Sabol to put runners on first and second. Cimber then took over on the mound and caught Jones looking at strike three before fanning Marder for the final out of the 10th.
The Ducks had runners on first and third in the bottom of the 11th with one out, but Connor Hofmann
's attempt to steal home was rebuffed and Thomas grounded out to third for the final out.
Oregon starter Tyler Anderson
allowed three runs on three hits and three walks, recording his seventh quality start of the year while fanning four in seven innings of work.
After retiring first 10 batters of the ball game, Anderson surrendered a one-out single to Joe Meggs in the top of the fourth. Meggs then stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on Jacob Lamb's sac fly to left to even the game at 1-1.
Washington loaded the bases later in the inning as Anderson sandwiched a single between two walks, setting the table for B.K. Santy. A shallow single to right was trouble for Oregon as it dropped between Pulfer and Jones, allowing two runs to score as Washington took a 3-1 advantage.
Oregon used a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth to close 3-2. Jones knocked a two-out single to right, and Marder was walked before Shawn Peterson
drove in his second run of the day as Jones scored on a single to right field.
Jones led off the bottom of the second with a deep double to right field. He moved to third on Marder's sacrifice before scoring on Peterson's groundout RBI.
Washington starter Geoff Brown allowed two runs on three hits in five and 2/3 innings of work before he was relieved by Kane.
Santy led UW at the plate with a 2-for-4 day.
The Ducks and Huskies will play game two at 5 p.m., Saturday from PK Park. The game will be televised by the Oregon Sports Network on Comcast SportsNet Northwest.
Chairback seats will be $7 tomorrow night at Las Vegas Night, and a Vegas Vacation will be given away.
