EUGENE - The No. 16 University of Oregon volleyball team (6-1) notched its fifth straight sweep of the season over Portland State (4-5) Tuesday night at Matthew Knight Arena.

UO's 25-21, 25-17, 25-21 victory stood as its first blanking of the Vikings under seventh-year head coach Jim Moore and raised his record to 4-1 in the series.

"We need to improve on a lot of things still," Moore said. "We have been good offensively but not tonight, and I'm starting to get impatient about our serving, which is something we will definitely work on this week. Our kids are improving, and we have a lot of room to grow. We need to balance getting people experience, but also get the best out of our team on the floor."

Sophomore middle blocker Ariana Williams led UO in both kills (10) and points (11) for the first time and blocks (2) for the fifth time this year, respectively, and posted its second-best hitting mark on the night (.292).

Redshirt junior outside hitter Alaina Bergsma also connected on 10 kills to lead the team in the category for the sixth time in seven matches this year, and added six digs and two blocks.

Freshman outside hitter Liz Brenner topped the hitting column (.375, 7 kills) for a team-high third time this year and added two blocks.

Sophomore setter Lauren Plum connected on her second double-double of the year (33 assists, 10 digs) and ninth career-wise.

The junior pair of libero Haley Jacob and defensive specialist Kellie Kawasaki both registered double-digit dig totals (17/9) for the second time this year, and the latter player dialed up a team-season high two aces for the second straight match. Jacob's dig total was also a season high by one, and bettered her total at Delaware.

Junior outside hitter Katherine Fischer added her fourth double-digit dig total the last five matches (10), and ended with eight kills, a block and an ace.

Oregon held Portland State to a .077 hitting mark - its second-lowest opposing total of the season behind Liberty's .045 mark last week.

Offensively, the Ducks hit below .200 for only the second time this year (.211) against the returning Big Sky champions, yet still held comfortable advantages in assists (40-25), aces (5-2), digs (61-47) and blocks (7-5).

"I thought Lauren (Plum) played great," Moore said. "She dug a lot of balls and tried hard to do a lot of things. Her setting wasn't her best, but I can't fault her energy level."

Viking individual category leaders included Megan Ellis (8 kills, 9.5 points), Leigh-Ann Haataja (.286), Nicole Bateham (12 digs), Garyn Schlatter (23 assists), Katie O'Brien (3 blocks) and Aubrey Mitchell (3 blocks).

In the first set, PSU held the lead only once, 2-1, but stayed within four points the entire set. The two teams were tied nine times through, 17-17, when two kills each by Bergsma and Fischer, and one by Williams helped the team end the set with an 8-4 run.

The second set saw Oregon jump out to a 10-3 lead thanks to four of Williams' kills. A Viking ace and two Duck attack errors help PSU draw within, 11-7. However, a 4-0 Oregon run with a kill from Bergsma and Fischer and two Viking hitting errors made it, 17-9. Fischer scored UO's last two offensive points on kills en route to the 25-17 decision.

PSU staked its biggest lead of the match, 2-0, to open the third set, but UO responded with four straight points on a Fischer ace and three Viking hitting errors. After UO held a 14-7 lead, Moore rotated the entire roster through the second half of the set as all 14 players played, and all except one posted stats.

Looking ahead, UO has a week before its next home match against returning Big West runner-up Cal Poly next Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at Matthew Knight Arena. The Ducks then open their first Pac-12 season against Arizona on Friday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., then host Arizona State, Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.
