02/25/12 | Softball
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - In the second day of the Cathedral City Classic, the No. 19 University of Oregon softball team (5-2) opened with an 8-0, six-inning win over returning World Series advancer Oklahoma State (6-7) at the Big League Dreams Complex Saturday.
The Ducks struck for two runs in the second inning, another in the third, three in the fifth inning, and two more in the six to stake their third, regulation-shortened win of the year via the eight-run rule.
Junior right fielder Sam Pappas knocked in her first game-winning RBI of the season in the second inning, thanks to a double down the left field line.
Two batters before, junior second baseman Kaylan Howard opened the inning with a single to shortstop, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Pappas scored soon after when she advanced to third on an error by the pitcher on a grounder, then scored on a failed pickoff attempt that skipped off the third baseman's glove into foul territory.
In the third inning, Howard claimed her fifth RBI of the weekend with a single to center field that scored senior shortstop Kelsey Chambers. The latter player had singled to third base with one out, and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt.
UO tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning after it sent seven batters to the plate. Sophomore catcher Courtney Ceo and Takeda opened with bunt singles, and a walk to Kelsey Chambers loaded the bases. A passed ball scored Ceo, and a single by sophomore first baseman Kailee Cuico added two more runs.
Oregon's final two runs came in the sixth inning thanks to a RBI bases-loaded grounder by freshman pinch-hitter Hannah Melick, and another RBI single by Kailee Cuico. Prior to their at-bats, freshman third baseman Jamie Rae Sullivan reached on a hit by pitch, senior pinch-hitter Christie Nieto pulled out a walk after going down 0-2 early, and Ceo lined her second single of the day.
At game's end, two other Ducks besides Ceo and Cuico rapped a pair of hits - Takeda (2-for-3) and Howard (2-for-3).
In the circle for UO, junior Jessica Moore notched her first shutout of the season and 12th career-wise to move into a tie for sixth all-time for Oregon with Melissa Rice. In her six innings, the returning All-Pac-12 pick from Sutter, Calif., struck out two, walked two, and scattered six hits.
Oklahoma State starter Simone Freeman (3-3) pitched the first 2.2 innings, recorded no strikeouts and one walk, gave up six hits, and two of her three runs allowed were earned.
Kat Espinosa worked the next 2.1 innings, struck out one, walked one, allowed three hits, and all three of her runs allowed were earned.
Morgan Hawkins got the final out for OSU via a K, walked one, gave up two hits, and her two runs allowed were earned.
At the plate for Oklahoma State, the first two hitters in the lineup both hit safely twice - Ari Morrison (2-for-3) and Kelsey Anchors (2-for-3), and two others hit safely once.
Stranding seven runners during the game, the Pokes loaded the bases twice, but Moore rose to the challenge each time.
In the first inning, Anchors hit a one-out double to right field, and after two walks, Moore forced a 6-3 grounder for the inning's final out.
OSU's bats came alive again in the fifth, thanks to three straight, one-out singles. Moore coaxed a grounder to second base for a force-out at home, then an unassisted grounder to first base.
Saturday's outcome narrowed OSU's lead in the series to 10-7. UO had won their previous meeting in 2006 (4-2), Oklahoma State won their 2005 contest (3-2), and the two teams split in NCAA Regional play in 2003 when Duck head coach Mike White served as an assistant coach.
Looking ahead, UO has one more contest Saturday at the Big League Dreams Complex at 2:30 p.m. vs. Northwestern. The tourney concludes Sunday with the Ducks' games vs. New Mexico State at 9 a.m. and Cal Poly at 11 a.m., respectively.
