Ducks Take a Shot at No. 6 Stanford but go Down 3-1
11/15/13 | Women's Volleyball
EUGENE, Ore. – Despite falling 3-1 on Thursday, the Oregon volleyball team (14-11, 7-8 Pac-12) put a scare into No. 6 Stanford (19-5, 12-3) as the Ducks were on the verge of taking a 2-1 set lead. Instead, the Ducks faltered down the stretch of the third set and the Cardinal went on to win 25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15.
Oregon had bounced back after a tough first set with a 25-20 win heading into the intermission, giving the team life when they returned to the floor for the third set. Oregon ran out to a 6-0 lead, a lead they held to 21-19 late in the set. From there, a ball-handling error and three attack errors spurred a 6-2 run by Stanford which stole the set by a score of 25-23.
“That was a winnable match,” said head coach Jim Moore. “Game three was a winnable match and unfortunately we didn't execute when we needed to.”
The Ducks held the fourth-best hitting team in the nation to a hitting mark of .268, nearly 50 points below its season average, but on the flip side Oregon could not get past the deadly Stanford block which also ranks fourth in the nation (2.99/set). The Ducks hit .126 and was blocked 18 times, 12 of which involved the Cardinal's Carly Wopat.
Liz Brenner and Ariana Williams led the team with 15 kills apiece while distribution of attempts was spread evenly among Oregon's four primary hitters. Brenner also recorded her 11th double-double with 14 digs.
Lauren Plum also notched a double-double with 44 assists and a team-leading 17 digs.
Oregon was even with Stanford for the beginning of the first set at 6-6 but a 12-3 run put the Cardinal in control as they finished to a 25-15 win.
The second set started similar to the first but the back-and-forth affair last even longer as the two teams remained tied at 16-16. The Ducks went on a 4-1 run before Stanford called a timeout and came back with two straight points, leading Moore to call a timeout of his own. Again the momentum shifted and Oregon capped the set with a 5-1 run, 25-20.
After a heartbreaking third set, Stanford continued to press and led 11-5 in the fourth set. That lead gradually expanded throughout the remainder of the set which ended 25-15.
Oregon will have a chance to bounce back quickly but will be tested again as No. 20 California comes to Eugene, Friday at 6 p.m. Oregon lost to the Bears in five sets earlier this season.
“We regroup and play on the first play tomorrow night,” Moore said. “It's that simple.”
