Civil War Win Closes Regular Season on a High Note
11/30/13 | Women's Volleyball
EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon's three seniors were sent off in winning fashion as the volleyball team (19-11, 12-8 Pac-12) defeated Oregon State 3-1, Friday, 25-13, 25-19, 21-25, 25-15.
It was the likely the seniors' last home match at Matthew Knight Arena, but not the last in an Oregon uniform, as the Ducks will now head to the postseason on a five-match winning streak.
The victory locked up fourth place in the Pac-12, right where the Ducks were slotted in the preseason poll. It was Oregon's strong second-half push that helped the Ducks climb the rankings as the team went 7-3 in its final 10 matches for the third-consecutive season.
Liz Brenner led all players with 22 kills on 43 attempts for a hitting clip of .349, surpassing 20 kills for the ninth time this season and recording her 15th double-double of the year with a match high 19 kills. She did most of her damage in the first two sets with 15 kills, including nine in the second set alone, powering the Ducks to the fast start which head coach Jim Moore was happy to see.
“Starting fast was the biggest thing for us tonight,” Moore said. “All season we've closed out better than we've started, so it feels good to finish the season starting fast.”
The Ducks came out fired up in the first set and jumped all over the Beavers early on their way to a 25-13 win. The second set win took a little more patience, but a 7-1 run out of an Oregon timeout put the Green and Yellow up 21-14 and propelled them to a 25-19 victory.
Coming out of intermission, it was the Beavers who had something to prove, and did so with a 25-21 win, leading from wire-to-wire and combining to hit .519 in the set.
The jump back into winning form was quick for Oregon which won the fourth set in impressive fashion, 25-15. The offensive focus moved away from Brenner in closing set and allowed Ariana Williams put together a strong set in front of the home crowd with six kills on 12 attempts.
Seniors Lauren Plum and Williams were major contributors to the night's success. Plum finished the night with 52 assists on 62 Oregon kills. Williams put down 15 of those kills while hitting .400.
Canace Finley added 10 kills and hit .381.
As a team, Oregon hit .314 marking back-to-back matches of breaking the .300 barrier.
The Ducks' postseason fate will be determined Sunday night at 6:30 p.m., with the NCAA selection show airing on ESPNU.
Moore noted that the chance of the Ducks hosting the opening weekend of the tournament is unlikely, but in regard to where the team will play, they'll simply have to wait and see.
“We're in. We've been in for a little bit, but it doesn't do any good to speculate [location of next game] because we have no idea.”
Notes:
-Liz Brenner moved into 10th on the Oregon season kills list with 480. She passed Sonja Newcombe (2009 -474) and is five kills from ninth place Sue Harbour (1985-485).
- Brenner moved to ninth on the season points list, now with 509.0. She passed Heather Meyers' 2009 mark (494.0).
- Brenner is tied for 10th on the Oregon career kills list with 1,235, matching Katherine Fischer.
- Ariana Williams passed Neticia Enesi on the career points list and is now seventh with 1,328.0.
