
Oregon Begins ITA Northwest Regional Tournament Action

STANFORD, Calif. - Oregon began play at the USATA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Stanford University Friday morning. Nia Rose won both of her singles matches in the rounds of 128 and 64 to advance to the third round (round of 32) tomorrow.
Rose opened the tournament by defeating Janaya Smith of Eastern Washington in three sets, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. She then dispatched her second round opponent, Angela Chen of Washington, by a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Alyssa Tobita won her round of 128 match over Eastern Washington's Erin Blessing, 6-1, 6-0. The Mililani, Hawaii, native dropped her match in the next round, 6-3, 6-0 to Klara Fabikova of California.
Allie Hueffner lost her lone singles match of the day, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 to Victoria Matejevic of Washington State. Nicole Long and Lina Åkesson both fell in their opening round matches in straight sets. Long fell, 6-3, 6-2 to Ellen Tsay of Stanford and Åkesson was tripped up by Gonzaga's Samantha Polayes, 6-0, 6-3.
Marlou Kluiving advanced to the round of 64 because her first round opponent withdrew. The sophomore was defeated in the second round by Elizaveta Luzina of Washington State, 7-5, 6-2.
The Ducks went 2-1 in doubles in the opening round of 64. Rose and Tobita teamed up for the second-straight weekend and recreated the magic that led to an undefeated 4-0 record last weekend at the WSU Invitational. The two knocked off Anna-Marla Nau and Tori Trylovich of Sacramento State, 8-5.
Kluiving and Long paired together and also won their opening round match. They defeated Barabara A. Carey and Madison Maloney of Seattle by a score of 8-1.
Hueffner and Åkesson lost their opening round match, 8-5, to California's Lynn Chi and Karla Popvic.
Tomorrow's Action: Both doubles teams of Rose/Tobita and Long/Kluiving will play tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the round of 32 for doubles. Rose will play at 10 a.m. in the round of 32 for singles.
