UO Finishes in Eighth Place in N.C.
10/12/14 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Ducks finished in eighth place at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational Sunday morning in Chapel Hill, N.C. with a 23-over 887. Cathleen Santoso led the way for the Ducks and tied for 11th place with a 217 (70-76-71). The course was soft from rain the previous day, but the temperatures were in the 50's at the UNC Finley Golf Course.
How It Happened: Before the third round started, Santoso finished up on No. 18 and completed her second round with a 4-over par 76. The Duck's second round score was a 300; their highest of the three rounds on the weekend.
The final round began with a shotgun start and all five Ducks teed off on different holes.
Santoso turned in the best nine for any Duck on the tournament when she carded a 3-under 33 on the front side. The sophomore birdied No. 2, 3 and 5 and was bogey-free on the front nine. She finished with a 38 on the back side for a 1-under par 71.
Kelsey Ulep recorded the second-best score of the day on the team with a 1-over 73. The freshman notched 15 pars and fired a 1-under 35 on the back side. She was consistent all weekend and finished the tournament tied for 21st with a 221 (74-74-73).
Both Caroline Inglis and Cassy Isagawa shot 76, but their scores came about in different ways. Inglis had three birdies, but she doubled the second hole and tallied five bogeys over the course of her round. Isagawa did not have a birdie today, but the senior was steady with 14 pars and four bogeys. Inglis (71-78-76) and Isagawa (76-73-76) both finished with 225 and tied for 35th place.
Cali Hipp ended the day with an 80 and finished with an overall score of 233 (76-77-80).
Duke – the defending national champions – won the tournament with a 2-under 862. Lauren Diaz-Yi of Virginia won the individual title with a 209 (70-69-70).
What It Means: The Ducks' 291 on the first day was a step forward for the Ducks this fall season. The first round score was the first sub-300 round of the year for Oregon and it also featured two Ducks – Inglis and Santoso – finishing under-par.
UO couldn't replicate it in the following days, but the low round showed the potential that the Ducks have.
Ulep Improved: The freshman was rock-solid this weekend and improved her score by 11 strokes from her Windy City Collegiate (232). She only had one double bogey and 12 total bogeys on the tournament.
Santoso Owned the Par-3's – The Sydney, Australia, native notched a 2.83 scoring average on par-3's at the Tar Heel Invitational. Overall she was 2-under on the par-3's over the course of the three-day tournament.
Her 10 birdies during the tournament tied for the fourth-best mark for any player.
Next Up: UO will travel to Stanford, Calif., and compete in the Stanford Collegiate from Friday, Oct. 17 to Sunday, Oct. 19.
