PULLMAN, Wash. – The freshmen doubles team of Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita won the No. 1 Doubles division title at the WSU Invitational Sunday morning in Pullman, Wash. The pair finished the doubles portion of the tournament 4-0 in the partial-round robin format.
Tobita and Rose – who entered the day 2-0 in doubles play – tacked on two more doubles victories Sunday against Luzina/Matejevic of Washington State and Marx/Bermudez of Idaho. The Ducks defeated the Idaho tandem, 8-5, and then concluded the day with an 8-7 victory over the Washington State team.
“We certainly want to thank Washington State and their staff for hosting a very nice event,” head coach Alison Silverio said. “We had a strong finish to the tournament today. Our goal for the weekend was simply to compete for every point and get tougher each day.”
The other Oregon No. 1 Doubles division team, Allie Hueffner and Nicole Long, dropped both of their matches Sunday morning. They narrowly lost to Washington State's team of Luzina/Matejevic, 8-6, and then they dropped their final match to Leenknecht/Bashota of Washington State, 8-2.
The No. 2 Doubles division saw the team of Marlou Kluiving and Sofia Hager lose their first match of the day, 8-4, to Washington State's team of Biryukova/Vasiukhina, but they rebounded and knocked off Yang/Badillos of Idaho, 8-2. The two Ducks finished 3-1 in their doubles division, good for second place.
Kadie Hueffner and Lina Akesson also competed in the No. 2 Doubles division. The pair dropped both of their matches today; the first match was an 8-4 loss to Portland's Dhatt/Gould and the second was an 8-5 defeat to the eventual No. 2 Doubles division winners, Biryukova/Vasiukhina of Washington State.
“We had little victories throughout the weekend and we were able to stay focused on the process,” Silverio said. “Our team gained insight to areas we need to improve on and we are excited to get back to work this week.”
The Ducks will return to action next weekend at the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Palo Alto, Calif., from Friday, Oct. 10 to Tuesday, Oct. 14.
