WILMETTE, Ill. – The Ducks played 36 holes and wrapped up day one of the Windy City Collegiate Championships tied for 10th place in the team standings Monday in Wilmette, Ill. Cali Hipp led Oregon in the first round of the day with a 74, and Caroline Inglis carded a 73 in the second round to keep the Ducks in the middle of the pack in a highly competitive field.
“Our scores certainly didn't come together as planned today,” head coach Ria Scott said. “Our players have each noted the mental mistakes they made and they are ready to move on from them.”
How It Happened: Hipp teed off at 7:57 a.m. (CT) and wasted no time in putting the Ducks on the right track. The senior from Caldwell, Idaho, was 1-under through the first six holes, and she ended the first round with three birdies.
Freshman Kelsey Ulep and Inglis both fired 75's, with both players going 38-37. Inglis poured in two birdies on the front nine, but the junior took a double bogey on the par-5 No. 8 to put her back over-par for the front nine. Ulep was a par machine, keeping it fairly consistent in her first round with 13 pars, four bogeys and one birdie.
Cassy Isagawa recorded a 77 and rounded out the four Duck scores in the first round of play. Oregon finished the first round with a 301, putting them in 12th place.
The Ducks had lunch, and then headed back onto the course for another 18. Inglis' 73 was a fairly clean card with two birdies and just three bogeys. Cathleen Santoso carded a 74 and showed off similar steadiness in her round with 14 pars.
Isagawa enjoyed two birdies in the second round, but the senior finished with a 78. Ulep's 79 was the other score the Ducks took, rounding out their second round total at 304. The Ducks cumulative two-round total of 605 puts them in a tie for 10th place heading into the third and final round tomorrow morning.
Inglis is T-18th (75-73) on the individual side of the tournament. Santoso moved up 20 spots from the conclusion of the first round and now sits at T-37 (78-74).
“Cali played decisively this morning, which we needed, and she plans to commit to that decisiveness tomorrow morning,” Scott said. “Caroline and Cathleen came through with solid finishes to wrap up the day. Kelsey had a solid morning in her first rounds as a Duck. Look for her and Cassy to improve on their rounds tomorrow as well.”
What It Means: While first-place USC's two-round total of 581 may prove too much for the Ducks to overcome, Oregon is still in the hunt to make a significant jump in the standings. Iowa State is in seventh place, and they are just ten strokes ahead of the Ducks (595).
Hipp Stepped Up: Hipp firing a first round 74 was huge for the Ducks, especially coming from a player that was playing fifth in their lineup.
Freshman Debut: Kelsey Ulep – playing in the No. 2 position for Oregon – made a successful college debut, especially in her first round (75). The Rocklin, Calif., native was 4-over through 12 holes, but she managed to birdie the par-5 15 and finish out her round strong.
Tomorrow's Action: Oregon will be playing with players from Miami and Ohio State tomorrow morning. Cali Hipp will lead the Ducks off at 7:57 a.m. (CT). She and the rest of the Ducks will start on the back nine.
