Ducks Edge Arizona State in Five Set Match

TEMPE, Ariz. – In a heart-pound match in the desert, the No. 10 Oregon volleyball team defeated No. 19 Arizona State in five sets, Saturday, 21-25, 32-30, 26-24, 24-26, 15-13.
How it Happened: Both teams were on their game defensively, especially Oregon (19-7, 9-7 Pac-12) which finished with 111 digs, the second-most in a Pac-12 match this season. That defense made for long rallies throughout the entirety of the match, only adding the five-set dramatics. While the defensive effort was spearheaded by libero Amanda Benson, who finished with a season-high 28 digs, many Ducks contributed as five ended the night in double-digit digs.
After Arizona State pulled away to win the first set, the Ducks showed heart in the second set when trailing 24-21 by fighting off seven ASU set points during their rally to a 32-30 win. Virtually nothing separated the two teams in sets three and four as well, with Oregon winning the third 26-24 but could not close out the fourth at ASU finished on a 4-0 run to win 26-24.
With the two teams tied at 13 in the final set, Oregon found a way to win with a Serena Warner and Martenne Bettendorf block, followed by a Macey Gardner attack error to wrap up the match.
What it Means: The difference between the two teams has been razor thin this season as they played to five sets in Eugene earlier this season with Arizona State coming out on top. In the 10 total sets played this year between UO and ASU, five needed to be decided in extra points.
Notes and Numbers: Liz Brenner finished with a career high 24 digs…Oregon is now 10-1 when three or more players record double-digit kills…Brenner (14 kills, 24 digs), Maggie Scott (36 assists, 14 digs) and Shellsy Ashen (29 assists, 13 digs) each recorded double doubles...both numbers are a career high for Scott.
Up Next: Oregon will return home for its final pair of regular season matches at Matthew Knight Arena. The Ducks will face UCLA, Friday at 8 p.m. and USC, Sunday at 11 a.m. Sunday's match will mark senior day for five Oregon student-athletes.
