No. 1 Stanford Too Much for Oregon
11/02/14 | Women's Volleyball
EUGENE, Ore. – Despite three tightly contested sets, the No. 12 Oregon volleyball team was overpowered by No. 1 Stanford, Sunday, 25-23, 25-21, 25-21.
How It Happened: Neither team could separate throughout the match with two points being the largest lead by either team in the first set, while a four-point difference was the largest in sets two and three. The Ducks were able to compete with the nation's No. 1 team and second-ranked offense, but the Cardinal finished each set strong using 3-0, 5-1 and 6-2 runs to end the sets. It was a bit of a role reversal from, Friday, when the Ducks were the aggressors at the end of each set.
“I thought we played well,” said head coach Jim Moore. “If we don't give them the eight points in the first two sets it's dramatically different. Part of it is we're aggressive, but you have to be aggressive and stay within yourself.”
What It Means: The match ends Oregon's home stretch where the Ducks are 11-3 this season. Three of the four remaining Pac-12 weekend's will be played on the road, starting next week at No. 2 Washington. The Ducks will be put to the test after only playing six true road matches this season resulting in a 4-2 record. Overall the Ducks are 6-2 away from Matthew Knight Arena.
Notes and Numbers: Martenne Bettendorf led the team in kills for the second straight night with 13…Amanda Benson recorded a team high 12 digs…while the Oregon held the No. 2 offense below its season average the Cardinal finished with a hitting percentage of .319, only the third time an opponent has surpassed .300 this season.
Up Next: Oregon will play at No. 2 Washington, Friday at 7:30 p.m. That match will be televised on ESPNU while the Washington State match at 11 a.m. on Sunday will be on the Pac-12 Networks.
