KIRKLAND, Wash. ? Oregon went 3-1 in the first round of singles play and turned in a solid first day at the PNW Intercollegiate. Three Ducks will play in singles semifinals tomorrow and Daan Maasland and Joey Swaysland will play in the semis in flight one of doubles.
“Overall, we had a decent day as a team, but there is definitely room for improvements,” associate head coach Jonas Piibor said. “We need to do a better job of being aggressive and stepping up when opportunities are there for the taking.”
Maasland and Swaysland opened up a successful day by first receiving a bye in the first round and automatically moving on to the quarterfinals. The two Ducks then met Robert Dula and Rendell Burghart of Eastern Washington and won by a score of 8-2.
The doubles team of Blake Anthony and Alberto Reyes played in the opening round and defeated Boise State's Abe Hewko and Lewis Roskilly 8-3. Unfortunately, Reyes and Anthony fell in the quarterfinals to Mathieu Garcia and Kent Andreasen of Portland 8-3.
In singles Maasland advanced to the semis with a straight-set victory over Dula of Eastern Washington 6-0, 6-4 in flight one.
Swaysland played the Ducks' only three-set match of the day in flight two and came out on top against Riley Newman of Seattle 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
Blake Anthony dropped his flight three match to Washington's Rishabh Raman 7-6 (3), 6-2, but Alberto Reyes was victorious in flight four over Ian Clare of Seattle 6-1, 7-6.

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. ? Simon Stevens notched two wins in singles consolation play to lead Oregon at the Jack Kramer Intercollegiate on Friday. Kevin Farin was forced to withdraw in his round of 16 singles match.
“It's unfortunate that Kevin had to withdraw, as he was really hitting his stride,” said head coach Nils Schyllander. “Simon really rebounded nicely today and was all-around solid in his two wins today and he looks to keep it rolling tomorrow.”
Stevens dropped his opening round match yesterday, but today the freshman notched two victories. His first victory came over David Laser of USC 6-3, 6-2 and his second came over another Trojan in Tanner Smith 6-4, 6-2.
Prior to singles play, Farin and Stevens paired together in doubles and fell in the quarterfinals to Nathaniel Lammons and Arkadjis Slobodkins of Southern Methodist 8-5.
