KIRKLAND, Wash. – Daan Maasland prevailed in the semifinals Saturday at the PNW Intercollegiate to advance to the flight one singles championship match tomorrow afternoon in Kirkland, Wash. Maasland knocked off Toby Mitchell of Boise State in three sets 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The Ducks began the day with Joey Swaysland competing in flight two of singles competition, and the senior fell in the semifinals to Washington's Viktor Farkas 6-2, 6-2.
Swaysland was back on the court shortly after, this time in flight one doubles play with Maasland. The two Ducks were defeated by Portland's Reid Delaubenfels and Steffen Dierauf 8-6.
Freshman Blake Anthony bounced back nicely from a first-round exit in flight three yesterday with two wins today for the consolation title. Anthony beat Brent Wheeler of Portland State in his first match 6-3, 6-2, and then did just enough to get by Eastern Washington's Wacil Bendjelti in the title match, 7-6 (5), 6-4. The Malibu, Calif., native finishes up the fall season 3-3 in singles play.
Alberto Reyes fell in his flight four semifinals match to Lewis Roskilly of Boise State 6-3, 6-4.
Tomorrow's Title Match: The flight one title match tomorrow projects to be a Pac-12 preview that will feature players from two Northwest rivals in Oregon and Washington. Emmett Egger – arguably the Huskies' top player – will face Maasland in what could potentially be the first of a couple matches between the two Pac-12 upperclassmen.
