EUGENE, Ore – The No. 10 seed Oregon volleyball team swept through its NCAA Tournament first round match against Santa Clara, Thursday, winning 25-15, 25-17, 25-16.
How it Happened: The Ducks were dominant both offensively and defensively, finishing with a .367 hitting percentage while holding Santa Clara to .057 thanks to 15 blocks. Serena Warner was at the center of that defense with 11 block assists and two solos, while Martenne Bettendorf tallied a career high 10 blocks.
Bettendorf had it going on both ends, leading the team with 12 kills and only one error for a clip of .478. She is the first Duck to get a double-double with blocks and kills since Ariana Williams against Utah on Nov. 22, 2013.
The Ducks never trailed in the first two sets, and led wire-to-wire in the first. It took a little longer to pull away in the second and third sets for the Ducks, but the blocking and strong hitting persisted to shut down the Broncos.
What it Means: Oregon will advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament where it will face LSU, which defeated Oklahoma in the first round 3-0. The Ducks have made a habit of not only making the tournament, but winning as well. The victory marks the third-consecutive year the Ducks have advanced past the first round.
Warner Makes Blocking History: Serena Warner's 13 total blocks is tied for fifth in Oregon single-match history, and is the most since the start of rally scoring in 2001. The total is the most since Michelle Christ recorded 13 against Oregon State in 1996.
Notes and Numbers: Freshmen Frankie Shebby and Taylor Agost combined for 13 kills and only one error during match. Shebby had seven kills while Agost put down six with no errors…Amanda Benson led the team with 13 digs…Maggie Scott led with 20 assists.
Up Next: Oregon will face LSU in the second round, Friday at 4 p.m.
Watch Party: Fans can take in both volleyball and football at Matthew Knight Arena, Friday, as there will be a watch party for the Pac-12 Championship Football game at 6 p.m. immediately after the match. Admission to the watch party is free and will open immediately after the conclusion of the volleyball match.
