TULSA, Okla. – The men's tennis team began Pre-Qualifying Singles competition at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., this morning at the University of Tulsa. Jayson Amos led the Ducks and notched two wins to advance to the third round of competition tomorrow afternoon.
Amos defeated Christian Harris from Clemson in the first round in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. Amos' next match was tighter, but the sophomore from Mission Viejo, Calif., bested San Diego State's Marko Goles Babic in straight sets again, 7-6(5), 6-4.
Joey Swaysland won his opening match over Wichita State's Guillermo de Vilchez, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 6-4. Swaysland's three-set, comeback victory was one of two Oregon three-set victories on the day.
The senior from Wagga Wagga, Australia, fell in his second round match to San Diego State's Hendrik Jebens, 7-5, 6-1.
Daniel Sardu suffered a similar fate to Swaysland in that he won his first round match, 6-7 (9), 6-4, 6-4 over Robin Haden from Mississippi State, but lost his second round match, 7-5, 6-4 to Ben Mullis of Drake University.
Freshman Simon Stevens dropped his first round match to Cristobal Rivera of LMU, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Alberto Reyes also lost his match, 6-2, 6-1 to the hands of the Frankie Colunga out of Texas A&M.
Closer Look: The Ducks proved on two occasions today that they were capable of rebounding from first-set tie-break losses. Swaysland and Sardu both showed resiliency in their first round matches and rallied to defeat their opponents in three sets.
