Ducks Win Hawaii Tournament, Stay Undefeated
09/07/14 | Women's Volleyball
HONOLULU – The hot streak continues for Oregon volleyball which won its sixth-straight match and second tournament of the season with a 3-1 victory against New Mexico at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic, Saturday, 25-18, 24-26, 25-19, 25-19.
How It Happened: Oregon finished the first set on an 8-3 run after New Mexico had closed within two points. The Ducks showed their resiliency in the second set as the Lobos were on the verge of taking the set at 24-21, but three-consecutive kills by brought the team level. While New Mexico finished the set with two consecutive points at 26-24, the Ducks carried that fighting spirit into the third and fourth sets which they won 25-19.
Oregon jumped out to a 5-1 start in the third set which set the tone on their way to victory. It was a 6-2 run in the fourth set that gave the Ducks breathing room at 22-17 and placed them in a prime position to close out the match.
The Ducks continued their efficient offensive production by hitting .356, the second time they have eclipsed .300 this season.
What It Means: Oregon has shown it can win in a variety of ways this season and have been well-tested in the early season. The Ducks have now won two matches in straight-set sweeps, two matches in four sets and two matches in a deciding fifth set. On Friday night they were pushed to the limit by No. 20 Hawaii in front of nearly 8,000 home fans as the Rainbow Wahine stormed back to win two-consecutive sets before Oregon closed the match. The Ducks had to once again stop their opponent's momentum on Saturday and did so in resounding fashion with 25-19 wins in the fourth and fifth sets.
Despite being a young team, Oregon has shown it can handle an opponent quickly in three sets or fight to the end in high-pressure situations which should provide confidence later in the season during matches with post-season implications.
Numbers and Notes: Four players finished with double digit kills in Liz Brenner (15), Martenne Bettendorf (15), Naya Crittenden (14) and Frankie Shebby (10)…the Ducks were balanced defensively as well with Brenner (11), Natalie Bookout Gonzalez (11) and Amanda Benson (10) in double-digit digs…Serena Warner's hitting line of .818 marks the first time a player has hit .800+ since Heather Madison in 2004.
All-Tournament Team: Liz Brenner, Kacey Nady and Frankie Shebby were named to the all-tournament team. It is the second all-tournament team for Brenner this season.
Up Next: Oregon will return home to face a ranked opponent in No. 14 Michigan State, Friday, Sept. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The new rankings will be released Monday but with an expected jump for the Ducks the contest could feature two closely-rated teams.
