10/11/15 | Men's Tennis
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Oregon men's tennis team will be playing in three championship matches tomorrow as it picked up ten wins on the second day of the UCSB Classic. Senior Daan Maasland led the way with three wins.
HOW IT HAPPENED: The day started with doubles action and the Ducks started off on a strong note behind wins from Jayson Amos/Armando Soemarno and Bartosz Sawicki/Cormac Clissold. In the flight A semi-final match, Amos/Soemarno took down UCSB's Morgan Mays/Amdrew Riminton 8-5 to seal their spot in the championship match tomorrow morning. Similarly in flight B, Sawicki/Clissold punched their ticket to the final match when they took down Eli Whittle/Everett Maltby of UC Davis in a tight 8-7 match.
In the other doubles matches, Daan Maasland/Simon Stevens bounced back from a loss yesterday to beat Strobel/Goldberg to play in the flight A consolation bracket final match tomorrow. In flight C, Brent Chin/Alberto Reyes came up short to James Wade/Jesse Ross of UC Davis, 8-5. They'll play in the third place match tomorrow.
On the singles side, Maasland won two close matches to advance into the championship match of the flight A final. The first obstacle for Maasland was Morgan Mays of UCSB, which Maasland took down 7-6, 7-6. He then faced UC Davis' Alec Adamson and won in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Also in flight A was Simon Stevens who won both his matches on the consolation side of the bracket and will play for 9th tomorrow. Stevens had a relatively easy time with both opponents. First, he won 6-3, 6-4 over Brett Bacharach (UC Davis) and he then took down Even McIntosh (Fresno State) 6-2, 6-2.
QUOTES:
Head Coach Nils Schyllander:
“We had a solid day today with some really good doubles play. I knew that we were good in doubles going into the tournament so it was nice to get confirmation of that. The energy from the newcomers has stood out. We will be a feisty bunch. Daan continued his great run today and he is really stepping up so far this year. It will be nice to play for three titles on the final day tomorrow.”
