Ducks Come Up Short at Stanford
10/12/15 | Women's Volleyball
STANFORD, Calif. – The Oregon volleyball team put a scare into No. 7 Stanford early, but fell to the Cardinal in four sets Sunday night, 25-27, 25-23, 25-10, 25-16.
How it Happened: The Ducks took the first set off the Cardinal behind a fast start from freshman Lindsey Vander Weide who led the team with 17 kills while hitting .370 for the night. When the Ducks were facing set point with Stanford up 24-23, Vander Weide leveled the score with a kill to start a 3-0 run which was finished by a Marine Hall-Poirier jump serve which saw no return, a situational substitution which paid dividends.
In a pivotal second set, the Ducks battled out of an early hole and eventually sparked a late 4-1 run to take a 23-20 lead. The Cardinal however, answered by rattling off five consecutive points to win 25-23.
Instead of the Ducks coming out of intermission with a 2-0 lead at Maples Pavillion, where the Cardinal have lost only twice since 2012, the two teams were level. In the final two sets the Stanford offense really started clicking with the home team hitting a combined .632 to win 25-10 and 25-16.
What it Means: The Ducks have now split all three conference weekend and hold a 3-3 record, but sit only a game out of third place where three teams are tied.
One of the bright spots in the match at Stanford was the offensive production of a pair of freshman. Lindsey Vander Weide and Sumeet Gill combined for 24 kills and hit .370 and .375 respectively. In a road match against the conferences reigning power, the two were not consumed by the big moment.
Notes and Numbers: Sumeet Gill finished with a career night recording seven kills and hitting .375, both of which are career highs…Martenne Bettendorf was one dig shy of recording her fourth-straight double-double (12 kills, 9 digs)…Amanda Benson led the team with 14 digs…Maggie Scott finished with 42 assists to go with five kills.
What's Next: Oregon will continue its travels next weekend with matches at Washington, Friday and at Washington State, Sunday. Both matches will be live on the Pac-12 Networks.
