Ducks Topped by No. 6 Wisconsin
12/04/15 | Women's Volleyball
MADISON, Wis. – The Oregon volleyball team's season came to a close, Thursday night in a four-set defeat against sixth-seeded Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19.
How it Happened: The young Duck team had to shake off some first-round nerves before they found their stride and returned to their end of season form. In fact, both teams were sloppy in the opening points but Wisconsin slowly pulled away throughout the set to win 25-18 behind eight kills from Kelli Bates.
The Ducks trailed 17-14 in the second set but stormed back with an 11-4 run to end the set to even the match at 1-1. Martenne Bettendorf, in her last match as a Duck, tallied five of her 12 kills in the second set on only seven attempts. The 12 total kills was tied with freshman Lindsey Vander Weide while sophomore Taylor Agost led the team with 13 kills and hit .458.
Even after the break, it looked like the Ducks would carry their momentum, going up 6-2 early in the third set. Wisconsin put an end to that with an 8-1 run of its own. Similar to the first set, the badgers slowly increased their lead and held off a late Oregon surge to take a 2-1 advantage after a 25-21 win.
Fighting for their lives, Oregon was within two points in the fourth set at 20-18 but Wisconsin carried on with the home crowd at their back and closed the match with a 5-1 run to advance.
What it Means: The match ended an up and down season for the Ducks but a strong finish resulted in their fifth-straight NCAA appearance. The Ducks finish the season at 16-14 with a tournament match under their belt, something to build on for a young team and three freshmen who received their first taste of the postseason.
Who Stood Out: Agost looked to be the best athlete on the floor at times, buoying the Ducks with her .458 line. The performance puts a bow on a stellar finish for the Portland native since switching to the right side.

On the difference between the first and second sets…
“We didn't do anything well in the first set. Then we settled down. They just calmed down and played better in that second set.
On the match's high level of play…
“The match was exactly the level we thought it would be. Most people I talked to thought Wisconsin was playing better than anyone in the Big 10. I felt this was going to be volleyball at a very high level.”
Lindsey Vander Weide
On the future…
“This year was a great year for us just being able to come back and get in the tournament. From here on out I think we can only get better. I look forward to the next three years, getting to the tournament against and going a lot further.”
