Ducks Dismantle Wolf Pack Again
02/01/15 | Men's Tennis
EUGENE, Ore. – The No. 43 Ducks soundly dismantled No. 66 Nevada for the second-straight day with a 6-1 win Saturday at the Student Tennis Center. Joey Swaysland provided the match clincher for the Ducks on court six with a three-set victory.
How It Happened: Similar to yesterday, Oregon (6-1) did themselves a favor by winning the doubles point and providing a one-point cushion.
This time it was the freshman tandem of Simon Stevens and Cormac Clissold who won first 6-1 on court three over Robert Margitfalvi and Peter O'Donovan of Nevada. The No. 1 doubles machine of Kevin Farin and Jayson Amos finished the job when they defeated Robert Allan and Moez Chargui 6-2 to give the Ducks the 1-0 lead.
Maasland completed an exceptional weekend of tennis with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Andrew Poustie at No. 2 singles. The Geldrop, Netherlands native is now 6-1 in spring singles matches.
Stevens made it a 3-0 advantage for Oregon when he edged out the Wolf Pack's Robert Allan 6-4, 6-4 on court five.
Swaysland delivered the knockout on court six when he took down Mile Cilic in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 come-back win that officially gave the Ducks the victory over Nevada. The senior is now 2-1 in spring singles play.
UO added on to their lead when Amos took care of Fernando Sunago 7-6 (4), 6-4 at the No. 3 position. Daniel Sardu added another notch to the win column as well when he weathered a back-and-forth affair on court four that saw him come away with the 7-5, 1-6, 6-0 win.
Farin and Chargui competed in a long match for the second-consecutive night, but Chargui was the one who finished the day on top and came away with a 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 victory over Farin for Nevada's lone point of the weekend.
What It Means: Oregon has now beaten ranked opponents in three-straight matches. In all six of their wins this season, the Ducks have held their opponents to one or zero points.
Quotable: Head Coach Nils Schyllander
On if fatigue set in at all…
“No, it's just a matter of digging in, playing every point still. I think we didn't need to go into thirds (sets) on some of them, we were just not as sharp early on in the singles as we were yesterday.”
On playing the same team back-to-back days…
“When you win as big as we did yesterday, it's hard not to have a little bit of a mental letdown. Credit to Nevada; they played really hard today, I think they wanted to prove something.”
Simon Stevens
On his overall day…
“We started singles with a 1-0 lead, which was good, and we brought the same energy from doubles. I had a few possibilities to win the second set 6-2 or 6-3, but then at the end of the set I played better than how I opened and that made the difference for sure.”
Up Next: UO will pack their bags and prepare for a crucial road swing next weekend. The Ducks will first travel to Bloomington, Ind., to take on Indiana on Friday, Feb. 6 at 11 a.m. (PT), and then they will head two hours south to Louisville, Ky., to battle Louisville on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 7 a.m. (PT).
