WACO, Texas – The No. 2-ranked Oregon softball team narrowly edge past No. 25 Tulsa, 4-2, on Friday at Getterman Stadium.
How It Happened: Jenna Lilley broke up the 0-0 stalemate in the top of the third with a bases clearing double to left field and put the Ducks (13-0) up 3-0.
Tulsa (7-4) scored a run in the fourth to make it 3-1, but Karissa Hovinga would finish out the inning before being relieved by Geri Ann Glasco in the bottom of the fifth.
The Golden Hurricanes cut the Ducks' lead to 3-2 in the fifth frame, but Oregon scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh behind Lilley's single up the middle that scored Janie Takeda.
After getting the first batter to fly out to center, UO head coach Mike White brought in Cheridan Hawkins to close out the game as the junior got the final two batters to pop up in the infield.
Hovinga pitched four innings for the Ducks, giving up just one earned run on four hits with three punch outs. Hawkins picked up her fourth save of the season thus far after shutting the door once again against the opposing batters.
Behind The Box: Both teams left six runners on base…Hovinga joins Glasco with a 4-0 record after recording the win…Lilley, Hailey Decker and Nikki Udria accounted for six of the nine UO hits…Oregon is now 4-0 against top 25 teams.
Up Next: Oregon will wrap up the Baylor Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 21, beginning at 7:30 a.m. (PT) against North Texas before concluding the tournament against the host, No. 7 Baylor at 2:15 p.m.
